It’s the middle of summer and ironically one of the busiest times of the year. My kids and I spend our days exploring our city, seeking reprieve from the intense summer heat at the pool, or getting crafty and creative at home. I really should have more time for exercise, and if I were a bit more ingenious motivated, I’d work out with my kids. The truth is that while I love to run, it isn’t always easy with the kids since I like to get my workouts done as quickly as possible. I’m not one that will spend endless hours in the gym, but I understand the importance of keeping my body active and healthy and it’s a principle I want to instill within my children.

So how do I stay motivated to work out?
Schedule Your Workouts: I live by my calendar, and if it isn’t scheduled, I likely won’t complete it. Exercise is so important for the body, it should be as habitual as mealtime. While I personally find Google Calendar to be a seamless way to integrate my workouts into my schedule, you might try one of these Fitness Apps. Tip: Have your gym bag packed with fitness clothes/shoes, a water bottle, and a towel so you’re always ready for an impromptu workout.
Invest in Quality Fitness Apparel: When I look good, I feel good. That goes for a night out with my girl friends, a meeting with clients, and my workouts. Set realistic goals and evaluate your progress regularly: Before I had children, I really enjoyed running. If you’re a runner, you know how little it takes to get out of a routine, and regaining that endurance can be quite the challenge. Rather than set an unrealistic pre-baby goal, I’ve decided to use a training schedule to help me regain the endurance I need to run distances. Whether you’re aiming to run a marathon, lose weight, tone, or simply live a healthier, more active lifestyle, set measurable goals that you can achieve. Remember that you can always aim higher. The satisfaction of accomplishing a smaller goal can give you the confidence you need to reach higher.
Find a workout partner or join a fitness community: Admittedly, I often find that it’s easier to accomplish my fitness goals if I go at it alone (as long as I’ve been motivated to actually get to the gym). I like to get in and out of the gym quickly and I find that working out with another person can be distracting. On the contrary, many people find that they reach their goals faster and are able to be more consistent when teaming up with a friend who can provide encouragement and accountability.
