The summer heat has been intense, which means these days you’ll find us hanging out at the pool…or the beach…or our backyard running through the sprinklers! Our kids love to be in the water, but the combination of our dry hot weather, the ocean, and the chlorine can really make it difficult to keep my daughters fine, wavy hair smooth and tangle-free. Thanks to Johnson’s No More Tangles, we have an easy, 3-step regimen that works to gently cleanse and moisturize my daughter’s hair without drying it out.
Since my daughter’s hair tangles easily and she’s very active (particularly during the summer months), I like to keep it up in a ponytail so that it’s out of her face and somewhat contained. And while this works some of the time, very often I’ll find she has taken her ponytail out, allowing her wavy tresses to be free! While I think her hair is absolutely lovely when it’s down, it practically makes more sense to have it up when she’s swimming, riding her bike, or painting. Inspired by Johnson’s No More Tangles Summer Hairstyles, I re-created their Side Tail Pony. While it really is just a glammed-up ponytail, my daughter absolutely loved it!
Before styling her hair, I followed our normal 3-step regimen:
1. Wash your child’s hair with Johnson’s 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner (Thick/Curly Hair and Thin/Straight Hair). I like having 1 product that washes and conditions my daughter’s hair since she typically won’t allow me to spend that much time washing her hair.
2. Use Johnson’s Leave-In Conditioner to smooth and detangle your child’s hair. I actually find that I only need about a nickel-sized amount of product to get my daughter’s hair smooth.
3. Unlock stubborn tangles with Johnson’s Detangling Spray. While this products works really well when my daughter’s hair is wet, I have also found that I can use it on her dry hair on those in-between days when I don’t wash her hair.
Once my daughter’s hair was clean and tangle-free, I told her we would be creating a very special hairstyle. She absolutely loved the Messy Side Fishtail Braid we learned how to re-create during our playdate with Johnson’s so she was excited and curious as I started working on her hair. As an FYI, I found it helpful to create this hairstyle while her hair was still wet as it was easier to get the hair smooth on top.
How to create a Side Tail Pony:
1. Using a parting comb, section part of the hair to the left (or right) ear and make the first ponytail.
2. Secure the first ponytail with a small elastic band.
3. Continue to part out small sections of hair and join the other ponies into them.
4. Connect remaining hair to the left ponytail making it into one big side ponytail.
5. Use Johnson’s Detangling Spray to smooth any flyaway hairs.
My daughter absolutely loved her Side Tail Pony which made her feel pretty and glamorous. I personally like that it keeps my daughter’s hair contained in a way that still makes her feel beautiful and princess-like. Knowing my daughter, she’ll be asking me to style her hair this way every day!
