An interesting thing happened at the 5th Annual Good To Go From Head To Toe Family Fun and Wellness Fair at Pretend City Children’s Museum. While my son and daughter were obtaining the screenings they needed to earn their free ticket to the museum, a dentist examined my son and noted that he identified a potential cavity. As you’ve probably read, we’re vigilant about dental health, and less than 6 months ago, both of my children were deemed cavity-free. I’m incredibly thankful both to the museum for offering these invaluable screenings to Orange County families and to the dentist that identified the potential cavity since I would have likely waited until our next routine visit for a check-up. While we weren’t able to avoid a procedure, we’re glad we caught it before it became a serious problem.
1,400 adults and children participated in Pretend City’s Wellness Fair, which has become an annual tradition here in Orange County. Routine developmental checkups are not part of a standard well-child visit which often results in missed opportunities to track growth and development. The Wellness Fair offered families an opportunity to learn how they can be involved in tracking their child’s development throughout the year and provided free developmental screenings including hearing, speech & language, behavior, BMI, fine/gross motor skills and dental health.
As an added incentive for participating in the screenings, children who visited 3 of the 8 stations received a free ticket to Pretend City Children’s Museum for a future visit.
As a parent, I find myself seeking out information and resources to help my children excel academically but often overlook the importance of developmental check-ups save our annual visit to our Pediatrician. I appreciate that Pretend City is working to educate and empower parents to be involved in this critical aspect of their children’s health.
In addition to the free screenings, the Wellness Fair offered families a balance of education and fun mixed in with some live music and hands-on activities. I also found it valuable to connect to local resources like Winder Farms, Lakeshore Learning Center, Safer 3 – Water Safety Foundation, SoCal Moms, Play Your Part, Arts & Learning Conservatory, and Hoag Medical Group.
Along with offering children a place for interactive, hands-on learning and purposeful play experiences, Pretend City Children’s Museum offers developmental screenings and tools for families and educators through it’s Good To Go From Head To Toe Program.
