Summer is right around the corner and we feel it… The sun is rising earlier and setting later… Our temperatures are soaring higher… My kids are getting restless. And our 100 degree temperatures last week did nothing to temper my childrens’ eagerness to run, jump, splash, play, and just be kids. There is something freeing about Summer for all of us. Without the obligations of homework and school bells, there is relief in those few extra moments of sleep…the lingering over oatmeal and scrambled eggs…a welcome reprieve from the rush and semi-chaos of school mornings.
There is something about the warm sunshine and breezy summer days that brings out the kid in all of us. Like most parents, I sprinkle in just enough educational activities to prevent summer brain drain from setting in, but for the most part, summer is all about giving my kids (and admittedly myself) a bit of a break. After all, these days of giggles and snuggles and tickles are fleeting. I can already see my children taking flight and it’s terrifying and thrilling. There are days where I simultaneously want them to stay exactly as they are and I can’t wait to see the people they become.
Perhaps this desire for my kids to just be kids for as long as possible is why Popsicle’s new guidebook featuring the Rules for Being a Kid resonates so deeply with me. Too often, my kids are exposed to messages that tell them they need to be taller, smarter, faster, more mature, and whatever else it is that they are not. None of these messages are inherently bad, but framing them in light of my childrens’ age and developmental stage is crucial. So, together with my kids, we’ve come up with a few Rules for Being a Kid.
1. Get Messy
2. Dream Big
3. Use Your Imagination
4. Get the Sillies Out
5. Learn to Laugh at Yourself
