Lea Michele, Martin Short, and James Belushi were just some of Hollywood’s greatest to grace the yellow brick road-inspired carpet over the weekend for the premiere of Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return. Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and Roger Stanton Baum’s Dorothy of Oz, the film follows Dorothy’s journey back to Oz to save her friends from an evil jester bent on exerting ultimate control through his “puppetry.”
Set just moments after Dorothy’s return from Oz, she finds her home and the surrounding area completely devastated by the tornado that whisked her away to the magical land in the original 1939 film. When she learns that her home has been condemned and that her family will have to leave, she flees to the storm cellar, only to be whisked backed to Oz via rainbow mover.
The entire land of Oz is in danger as a wicked Jester seeks revenge and control as retribution for the fate of his sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. When prominent citizens of Oz are transformed into marionettes, including Glinda the Good Witch, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion realize that Dorothy is their only hope for saving Oz.
Dorothy’s return to Oz is met with a number of obstacles, including a fragmented yellow brick road that isn’t as instrumental in guiding her to the Emerald City as she had hoped. Along her journey, Dorothy meets Wiser the Owl, Marshal Mallow, China Princess, and Tugg, and they band together to stop the evil Jester and save the citizens of Oz. Reminiscent of the original film, these new friends bond over songs written by Bryan Adams as they navigate the Jester’s tricks and turns to thwart their journey. Resounding with nostalgia and themes of teamwork and friendship, Legends of Oz engages the whole family in a magical adventure back to the place where “the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.
Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return debuts in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 9th, 2014.
