This post is part of the HEALTHY ESSENTIALS® 2014 program by Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. and The Motherhood, who sent me a box of products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences and photos shared here are all my own, and I hope you enjoy them.
Traditionally, April is the month we dedicate to spreading awareness and demonstrating support for protecting our environment and its resources. For years, our family has worked to reduce our footprint. From very small steps like making a commitment to recycle every single day to larger steps like installing a water filtration system, we continually look for ways to live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle. And thanks to Johnson & Johnson’s valuable resource HEALTHY ESSENTIALS, I discovered some new, easy ways for our family can work to further reduce our impact on the environment.
Recycle Your Bathroom Products
You might remember that I shared some compelling statistics about the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills every single year. I personally can attest to the fact that prior to learning about all of the items that can be recycled, I threw away a lot of empty bathroom containers. Many bottles used to house shampoo/condition, lotion, face cleanser and more can be recycled. Simply look for bottles marked #1 (PETE) and #2 (HDPE) or visit Earth911.com if you’re unsure.
Plant an Edible Garden
Since we moved into our home, we’ve planted everything from tomatoes and avocados to blackberries! Our backyard isn’t large, but we’ve still managed to grow a few fruits and veggies which is not only great for inspiring our children to eat healthy foods, it is wonderful for the environment. Get started with your own Edible Garden by visiting HEALTHY ESSENTIALS.
Eat More Greens
As I continue to learn more about the foods we consume, I am making strides to create our own meals at home as opposed to purchasing them already prepared. Limiting the number of meals we eat out each week not only helps us save money, it gives me more control over the ingredients we use. I can incorporate a wide variety of fruits and veggies into pastas, salads, sandwiches, soups, and smoothies. You can make your very own Green Smoothie in just minutes using produce you have at home.
Donate a Photo
