I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Seventh Generation. I received a promotional item and product samples as a thank you for participating.
Seven years ago, I practically ran outside of the Morningside flat we were living in to evade the cleaning fumes that were overwhelming my senses. But rather than take a stroll for a breath of fresh air, I headed to the local library in town for answers. That was the first time I had ever stopped to question the safety of the chemicals we use in and around our homes…chemicals that line store shelves across the nation. I thank my hormone-induced hypersensitivity to smell for heightening my awareness to protect my unborn baby.
At that time, the options for safe, natural, sustainable household products were limited. I happened upon Seventh Generation and was surprised by their transparency and commitment to toxin-free products that were good for both our family and the environment. Throughout the life of this blog, I’ve attempted to share our journey towards living a cleaner, greener lifestyle. From simple steps like conserving water to more involved projects like installing a programmable thermostat, my passion has always been to show you that it doesn’t often take a wealth of time or resources to effect change. That is why I’ve joined Seventh Generation as a Toxin Freedom Fighter.
Did you know?
-
More than 80,000 chemicals available in the United States have never been fully tested (less than 10%) for their toxic effects on our health and the environment
-
Scientists have linked exposure to toxic chemicals to many health risks, including Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects, and various reproductive problems.
-
The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed in 1976, and unlike other major environmental laws, has never been updated. As present, tens of thousands of potentially harmful chemicals continue to be used in the marketplace since the 1970’s without proper testing and without disclosure by the companies that produce them.
As a parent, I read the labels of everything my children put in their bodies. I expect transparency from the companies that manufacture those foods. Why should I expect anything less from the products I’m using around our home? I want to pick up a household product and make the best decision for our family, but I cannot do that if the information I need to make that decision isn’t provided.
Will you join me in helping to shape reform?
Seventh Generation’s goal is to gather 100,000 signatures with the hopes of creating change around the Toxic Substances Control Act. I signed Seventh Generation’s petition for safer chemicals to help change the way chemicals are studied, evaluated, and tested for safety. Through April 24th, 2014, I encourage you to be involved with this movement to effect change at the national level by simply signing the petition.
Seventh Generation is one of the few brands on the market that is mindful of their impact on both the environment and the families that use their products. The company is committed to providing toxin-free, sustainable products and that commitment is backed by their transparency. But what sets Seventh Generation apart is their leadership and initiative to effect change on a national level.
I, like many families, hope that change comes quickly. We are doing our part by being discerning about the products we use in, on, and around our bodies and being mindful of our footprint. But it will take the collective voice of families across the country to see the type of change we desperately need in a world filled with toxins that directly affect our health and well-being.

And to learn more about Seventh Generation’s campaign for safer chemicals, join us on Thursday, April 10th at 1: pm ET for a #FightToxins Twitter Party. We’ll be talking about tips and tricks for living a healthy lifestyle and the importance of using products with a minimal amount of chemicals.
