Before I interviewed May Evans, mother to NFL player Derrick Coleman, I knew that I would come away inspired. After all, she brilliantly used devised a pantyhose skull cap to keep her son’s hearing aids in place. If you’re not familiar with Coleman’s story, you must see this short video that aired during the Super Bowl.
When Coleman was just 3 years old, he lost his hearing…but that hasn’t stopped this extraordinary man from playing football. As the Seattle Seahawks’ starting fullback, Coleman is the first NFL deaf offensive player. His story is one that will inspire adults and children alike to work to overcome any obstacles to achieving their dreams.
Last week, I spoke with Coleman’s mother who shared the challenges of helping her son overcome adversity to achieve his dream of playing professional football. As a mother, I can only imagine the internal conflict she must have faced. In the end, she didn’t allow her fears to take control. She trusted the power within her son to achieve his dreams. Watch as Evans shares her journey of raising her son.
