Country Crock Contest

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Summer is around the corner and I have been working hard to lose the residual baby weight.  Exercise and a proper diet are key to weight loss and management.  As someone who doesn’t eat a wide variety of foods, (I have my favorites that I tend to stick to) I  have to work hard to ensure I’m getting all of the appropriate nutrients (which are best absorbed when derived from foods, as opposed to vitamins).  One of the things I do is try to buy foods that have added vitamins and minerals in them.  For example, I love to drink orange juice so I purchase the calcium and vitamin D-fortfied varieties because I’m lactose intolerant.  I also buy cereals with added vitamins/minerals in them both all three of us.

682Growing children and women of all ages require more calcium than is likely obtained solely be consuming dairy products.   I was recently introduced to Shedd’s Spread Country Crock Calcium plus Vitamin D thanks to Mom Central. According to Mom Central, 9 out of 10 girls and 3 out of 4 boys don’t get enough calcium which is important for the development of strong bones and teeth.  I also learned that there has been a decline in Vitamin D levels among Americans over the past 10 years (likely due to the fact that we no longer worship the sun), which is important for proper calcium absorption.  I have to be honest, I have never really purchased margarine or spreads in the past because I wasn’t sure I would like them.  However, I like butter a little too much and it has more fat and calories than I’d prefer for a condiment. One serving of the new Shedd’s Spread provides 100 mg of calcium and 80 IU of Vitamin D.  I like that you don’t have to set it out before spreading it (one of my pet peeves with butter).  It also tastes really good and contains 50 calories and 5 grams of fat (as opposed to 100 calories and 11 grams of fat in butter).

If you’re looking for recipe ideas, nutrition information and tips on getting more Calcium and Vitamin D in your diet, check out the Country Crock website.

How much do you REALLY know about Calcium?  Take the quiz on the site for a chance to win a $25 Visa gift card.  You’ll also be entered for a chance to win a family vacation for five to Yellowstone National Park.  Contest ends June 13 2009.
