When I was a little girl, I played the piano. In the beginning, it wasn’t something I was particularly fond of (sorry mom!). But as time went on, I came to really enjoy my piano lessons. I still played the piano through college, mostly for fun. I write a lot about music and children because I believe that music has tremendous benefits for children. Some of those benefits include enhanced cognitive development, fostering of creativity, and increased productivity.
Some of my son’s favorite toys are the play musical instruments we’ve bought for him. We recently had an opportunity to check out First Act, “a lifestyle music brand enriching people’s lives through all things musical.” The company has a line of instruments geared towards children called First Act Discovery. Here you’ll find guitars, keyboards, drums, and more.
One of the company’s most popular products is the 30 inch Classic Acoustic Guitar. The guitar is as professional looking and functioning as you can get for a child. It has a classic hardwood body which I think helps children feel like their guitar is “real” but it’s not so heavy that a smaller child couldn’t hold or carry it. In fact, the size and shape was designed specifically for children over 4. I was so impressed with the construction of this guitar. The strings are steel! Can you believe that? When you think of a guitar for kids, you expect it to look and play like a toy. That is not the case at all with this guitar. It looks, feels, and sounds like a mini version of a real guitar. It sounds phenomenal too, once you tune it! By the way, tuning will require either a piano or an electronic tuner and an adult!
Learning to play is actually not as difficult as it might appear. The guitar comes with letters you can stick on the string post covers that match the name of each string for easy learning. The guitar also comes with a set of chord cards that can be placed under the strings to learn the chords easily. I remember how intimidating learning an instrument can be so it’s nice that the company has made it easy and enjoyable for children to learn. The guitar also comes with a set of boy and girl stickers so children can make the guitar their own. And because we know that children will break strings through the learning process, replacement strings are included with this guitar! I can’t wait until my son is a little older to truly appreciate this!
Learning to play an instrument enhances intellectual development, emotional IQ, physical ability, and social interactivity. Be sure to check out First Act Discovery for a wide variety of well-made, musical instruments designed specifically for children. The Acoustic Guitar retails for $30 (which is really affordable) and can be purchased directly from the site or at Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us.
