Bobbie! I want to play with Bo-bb-ie! I can typically understand my 3 year old, but the day we arrived home and the huge box that housed Barbie’s new home was sitting inside my living room, I honestly had no idea what she was trying to communicate. Finally, she pointed to the house and practically squealed BO-BB-IE! Operation build a dream house was about to begin.
While my daughter has a few dolls, we hadn’t really delved into the world of this iconic fashionista until this past summer. After 41 years of living in Malibu, Barbie put her 3-story pink Dreamhouse up for sale and traveled the globe, in search of a new place to call home. During the Barbie Is Moving Mobile Tour, little girls like my daughter got an inside look at Barbie’s world through engaging, authentic experiences like tapping into her creativity through doll fashion designs, interior decorating via Mega Bloks building stations, and a glamorous fashion runway show complete with photo opps. From New York to Paris to Australia, Barbie experienced the glitz and glamour of some of the most popular cities in the world. But at the end of the day tour, she realized that California is her home (I echo her sentiment). Barbie will be moving back into her newly renovated Dreamhouse, which features 3 stories, 6 rooms, and pristine ocean views.
Now little girls all over the world can experience the magic of Barbie’s new Dreamhouse. With a brand new look, this luxury home can house little girls’ dolls, dreams, and adventures. I had a small house for Barbie as a child, but it pales in comparison to this gorgeous, intricately designed, fully-furnished home. Putting this house together was not an easy feat, but the smiles, hugs, and joy from my daughter were worth every single moment. Two things that would have made the task much more feasible include written directions (at present, the Dreamhouse only comes with a sheet of visuals that at times were confusing) and pre-applied stickers. I ended up enlisting the help of my husband and together we managed to figure out where each piece belongs. Tip: I recommend putting this house together when your child is asleep or at school.
Once put together, this house is striking visually and functionally. There are two pull-string elevators, a walk-in closet, pink “stainless steel” appliances, a canopy bed, a television that “flips” channels, a working doorbell, and lights/sounds throughout the house (fireplace, chandelier, shower, toilet). It is impressive in size at 3 1/2 feet tall (which is taller than my daughter) and expands outward from the center. While there are a number of small pieces (over 50), I like the fact that they actually stay put on the counters and tables or in the dolls hands.
My daughter has absolutely loved playing with this house and her only question for me is, where are Bobbie’s friends? She’s spent a lot of time engaging in pretend play and has even enlisted her brother, although the only character he will agree to be is the dog!
Barbie’s Dreamhouse is available at Walmart for $184.99 $159!
