One of the benefits of being an only child was the incredible amount of independence I developed. While most of my friends wouldn’t think about driving from LA to San Luis Obispo solo, I found it exciting. I am a very social person, but I also really enjoy alone time and am comfortable going to the theater or dining at a restaurant by myself.
Once I graduated high school, I developed an interest in visiting tea rooms and purchased a book which listed all of the team rooms in the US. During my travels, I’d seek out the venues listed in my book and check them off and it became a fun, exciting hobby. Even today when we travel, I’ll search for a local tea room to visit if time permits.
Living as close as we do to LA means that there are a number of tea rooms, many of which I have frequented over the years. Afternoon tea at The London West Hollywood has been on my tea room bucket list for some time now. The hotel is chic and sophisticated, so I expected their tea service to be reflective of the quality and class I’ve experienced on previous occasions.
Since the hotel has partnered with Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful, for a festive, film-inspired tea series, I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon sipping tea with my mom. The London Hotel’s Fantastical Oz Tea series features a delightful, family-friendly menu with a gourmet twist. Despite the level of class you’ll find throughout the hotel (from the decor to the service), don’t let that stop you from bringing your kids. I can’t imagine a more perfect occasion to introduce children to afternoon tea.
One of the first things I always look at when visiting a tea room is the menu. With names like Flying Monkey Bites, Emerald City Miniature Sandwiches & Canapés, and Evanora & Theodora’s Wickedly Delicious Treats, your kids will be excited about trying all of the themed menu items. Some of the stand-out dishes include the Mini Peanut Butter, Banana & Honey Sandwiches Straight from Kansas, Peanut Butter Scones with Strawberry Jam, and their Yellow Brick Road Lemon Meringue Bar. Additionally, the hotel is offering an Emerald City Green Tea with Jasmine Flowers (which is absolutely incredible!) and a Wicked Witch Brew which is comprised of 100% juice.
When families arrive, children will receive Oz-inspired gifts including a Magic Wand, Golden Bubbles, and Chocolate Coins! The table set-up includes The Land of Oz Placemats with games and puzzles to keep kids entertained while they wait for the food to be prepared.
Most tea services can be pricey, so I was surprised at how affordable this one is at just $28 for adults and $14 for children.
After your magical afternoon, be sure to enter their raffle for a chance to win The London’s Great & Powerful Package including a one-night stay in a London Suite, 2 tickets to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park, The Collector’s Edition “Art of Oz” book, and Oz the Great and Powerful Blu-ray DVD. Since entries are limited to families that participate in this tea series, I think the chances are actually quite good!
The London Hotel’s Fantastical Oz Tea series runs through August 18th on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Gordon Ramsay Formal Dining Room. To make reservations, call 310.358.7788.
