Confession: I am not a fan of carpet! When we moved into our home nearly four years ago, I only had a few requests, one of which was to rip out the entire upstairs carpet to replace it with something cleaner and greener. Even without kids or pets, carpet manages to hold onto dirt and other debris that can be impossible to remove. Stains from spilled juice or pet accidents can set quickly, and if not removed, become permanently entrenched within that carpet. I figured that if we started with new carpet, I could maintain some control over the stains, dirt, and debris.
Because I am so particular about our carpet, I have a “no shoes, no food” rule for all of the carpeted areas in our home. You probably know how effective that rule is! And despite my best efforts, our carpet has seen a myriad of spills and accidents…human and pet-initiated! Up until recently, our only means of getting these types of stains out were carpet cleaner sprays and foams. In our experience, their effectiveness is hit-or-miss, typically more than one application is required, and they usually smell awful!
Bissell recently introduced the SpotClean Complete Pet, a portable carpet cleaner designed to permanently remove even the toughest pet stains from carpets, rugs, stairs, and upholstery. This is the ideal machine for a family that only needs spot treatments, as opposed to regular cleaning of all carpeted areas in the home. It comes equipped with everything you’ll need to remove stains including 3 cleaning tools, Bissell OxyGen Boost Formula, and Bissell 2X Pet Stain & Odor Formula.
The machine comes assembled, and all that is required is the attachment of the Tool and Hose Holders by simply inserting them into the machine with one “click.”
Simply fill the clean water chamber with hot water, Bissell OxyGen Boost Formula, and Bissell 2X Pet Stain & Odor Formula according to the labeled fill lines. Select your cleaning tool and attach it to the hose. Plug in the machine and begin cleaning by spraying the solution onto the stain, scrubbing with the brush, and then applying downward pressure to remove the dirt and water.
You’ll want to continue doing this until you are unable to remove any dirt (visible in the Dirty Water Tank). One of the suggestions to take note of is that you can remove additional liquid/moisture, by running over the area with dry strokes. This will help hasten the drying time.
The SpotClean Complete Pet is equipped with a 3-inch Tough Stain Tool for cleaning hard-to-reach areas, stairs and upholstery and a Stain Trapper Tool for particularly difficult messes. What I like about the Stain Trapper Tool is that it traps these particular messes in a separate container for emptying. To use this tool effectively, you have to move it over the soiled area slowly so that the soiled water doesn’t flow back into the hose. We haven’t used this particular tool yet, since we have yet to experience a mess of this size (thankfully!).
This machine was incredibly easy to use and I like its lightweight, compact design which makes it easy to store. It was effective at getting out two of the stains I have had difficulty removing for YEARS, but I pre-treated the areas for 5 minutes as suggested in the manual. I like seeing the dirty water in the chamber because I know that the machine is working. And while the cleaning solution does have an odor, I did not notice it once the areas I had treated were dry. Check out the before and after photos:
Overall, we were quite pleased with the effectiveness of Bissell’s new portable carpet cleaner and the price, at under $100, is unbeatable. There are a few minor things I’d love to be improved in a future model, including the following:
- The ability to rinse the carpet after cleaning.
- A spill-proof way to measure out the water and two cleaning agents.
- The ability to use other solutions besides the two suggested by Bissell.
