Google and Disney Announce “Find Your Way to Oz,” A Brand New Google Chrome Experiment

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

I believe in being an innovator – Walt Disney

The name Disney has always been synonymous with storytelling…it is the core of the company and behind every single thing they do.  So when I first learned that Disney was partnering with Google, I was intrigued. As someone with a passion for film, I know that the stories are what determine relatability (and subsequent success) amongst audiences.  But given our technology-driven society, is there a way for the two to merge in such a way that the end result is something so spectacular and technologically advanced that the experience is unlike any that has yet to be seen?

On February 5th, Google and Disney will launch Find Your Way to Oz, a highly interactive experience designed specifically for Chrome. This is the first time Google has partnered with a studio and the result is so innovative, immersive, visually stimulating, and technologically advanced, it was not possible even one year ago.

Rather than using an app or plugin, Find Your Way to Oz occurs directly in the browser.  Users are taken through a dusty Kansas circus to the land of Oz by way of a massive storm.  Once there, you’ll have the opportunity to compose your own music, take photos in the photo booth, and create your own movie with a zoetrope.  Additionally, users who survive the massive storm will have the opportunity to watch an exclusive, unreleased clip from the film.

Our goal was to combine the richness of cinema with the technical capabilities of the browser to create a fun, immersive experience that users can form a strong connection with – Unit9

As you might imagine, the experience is fun and engaging and I particularly love the feature that allows the making of my own moving picture.  But what sets this 3D experience apart is the rich visuals.  It literally feels like you have stepped into the glorious worlds created by film director  Sam Raimi.

What happens when the creativity of film and the technology of web development are combined?  Find out on February 5th when Disney and Google release Find Your Way to Oz.
