Me: [Yawning] I felt like I didn’t sleep at all!
Jason: [Yawning] At least you didn’t have a child kicking you all night!
After experiencing some of the best sleep of our lives, both my husband and I started tossing and turning…waking up unrested…yawning mid-day…falling asleep on the floor in the middle of the kids’ bedroom in hopes they would stay put in their beds.
Perhaps one of our most persistent parenting challenges is helping our children fall and stay asleep. What began as good intention to bond with our children and help them feel secure, has resulted in a toddler and a kindergartener who would prefer to sleep with mommy and daddy all. the. time.
While we assumed that the reason our son was waking up in the middle of the night was his realization that mommy and daddy weren’t nearby, I did wonder if the crib mattress he was sleeping on in his toddler bed was uncomfortable. I started lying down next to him to help him go to sleep, and realized that his toddler bed was actually too firm and quite uncomfortable. A new mattress was definitely in order!
In the Fall, I shared my best tips for helping children fall and stay asleep. Along with a brand new mattress and a set of big boy Spider Man sheets, I thought we were golden! We did our homework by researching the best mattresses, visiting a local Serta retailer, and testing a few models out to find the right one. Our son wasn’t with us when we tested out the mattress at our local retailer, so I was designated the official “tester.” I laid down on a few different models of the Perfect Sleeper mattress, but since they all felt “comfortable,” I went with the suggested Plush Model.
Named the first official mattress of the National Sleep Foundation, the Perfect Sleeper mattress was engineered with input from the NSF to help solve some of the most common causes of poor sleep including tossing and turning, lack of support and subsequent back pain, sleeping too hot or too cold, partner disturbance, and mattress roll-off/sag. The mattress is available in four comfort choices including Firm, Plush, Euro Top and Pillow Top. Each model offers it’s own level of comfort and support, and given the fact that my son really needs both at his age, we opted for the Plush model, which is really the perfect balance of the two. The Plush model features “classic tailoring” with more “give” at the surface due to it’s additional plush comfort layers.
This particular mattress is much lighter than our iComfort mattress, so moving it around to get it situated in my son’s room was easy. After situating it and dressing it up with sheets, it was time to introduce my son to his brand new mattress. As excited as my son was about his big-boy mattress, he was even more excited about his new big-boy Spider Man sheets (kids!). But getting him to sleep in his bed was not an issue those first few nights.
When I asked my son how he liked the mattress, his response was “it’s good.” While I do think he is old enough to notice a difference in this new mattress, I’m not sure that he can verbalize whether or not one is better than another. I figured I should lie down on it for several nights to really get a feel for it’s support and comfort and to compare it to our own iComfort mattress. Almost immediately, I noticed a difference in terms of support and comfort. It also helped that even at it’s twin size, I could sleep comfortably without the fear of falling off the bed! It definitely has a different feel from our Cool Action Gel Memory Foam mattress, but nonetheless it is incredibly comfortable. I absolutely love the plush layers since I prefer a softer bed, but I never felt like support was lacking.
So why choose Serta’s Perfect Sleeper Mattress?
1. Comfort Like No Other: Serta’s Advanced Comfort Quilt System helps distribute weight evenly to improve circulation and reduce pressure points so you’re not tossing and turning all night.
2. The Support You Need: Depending on the model you select, Serta’s FlexZone or Continuous Support Innerspring design provide support and help maintain proper spinal alignment.
3. Sleep Cooler: Some people, like my husband, overheat at night. Serta’s Advanced Comfort Quilt System helps reduce heat build up at the surface and allows air and excess body heat to easily flow through the foams and fibers for a cooler sleep surface.
4. Sleep, (Un) Interrupted: Serta’s Perfect Sleeper is designed to reduce motion transfer between sleep partners. The result is the comfort and support each of you need, without disrupting each other.
5. Long-lasting Sleep For Years To Come: Serta’s advanced encasement design strengthens the mattress edges to prevent “roll-off.” Additionally, each mattress is tested beyond industry standards to ensure that it will provide optimal sleep for years to come.
If I had to choose between my iComfort Sleep System and my son’s Perfect Sleeper Mattress, I’d be torn. They both offer the support and comfort needed for restful sleep. Choosing a mattress is as much about preference as it is about comfort and support. Many people love memory foam, while others prefer a traditional innerspring mattress. I highly recommend utilizing the resources available, including Serta’s Mattress Selector and Ask & Answer Section to help you make the best decision.
