If the process of shopping for an item you’ll spend 6-8 hours with each day for the next ten years seems daunting, you’re not alone. A mattress is not only a financial investment. The average life of a mattress is 5-10 years, so there is a level of commitment involved with making such a purchase.
Having read a number of articles on what should be considered when purchasing a mattress, I thought I’d share some tips I’ve learned.
1. Do your homework.
It goes without saying that research is a crucial part of the process. It’s important to think about who will be sleeping on the mattress. The process will be different for couples shopping for a mattress versus those shopping for a child’s first mattress. Also consider the reason for buying a new mattress. If the current mattress is uncomfortable, it will be important to try to determine why so as not to end up purchasing another mattress that isn’t conducive to restful sleep. You might also consider those factors that interrupt sleep in order to find a mattress that may help alleviate those discomforts.
You can begin by visiting the manufacturer’s website to get an idea of the types of models offered. Remember that the names/models may vary from store to store.
2. Talk to an expert.
If you suffer from a sleep disorder or a medical condition, your physician likely has some helpful suggestions. For example, if you suffer from back problems, he/she may suggest a mattress type that can help alleviate some of those symptoms.
3. Test it out.
If you have the option of an extended trial, I recommended taking it, particularly if you are experiencing a disruption in sleep. Even 30-60 minutes at a store isn’t enough time to determine whet or not sleeping on said mattress will be comfortable for 6-8 hours each night.
4. Shop at a reputable mattress retailer.
Because you’ll likely have your mattress for many years, it’s important to select an established retailer with a favorable reputation.
Having considered the above, I went Serta’s website and utilized their mattress selector tool to help me determine which mattress would be ideal for my son. Because I am shopping for a child, Serta recommends their Perfect Sleeper mattress, the first official mattress of the National Sleep Foundation. This mattress was designed with input from the National Sleep Foundation to help address and alleviate the 5 most common sleep problems including tossing and turning, lack of support and subsequent back pain, sleeping too hot or too cold, partner disturbance, and mattress roll-off or sag.
I can’t wait to share more information about how my son has been sleeping since switching from a toddler bed to a brand new big boy bed!
What are your best tips for shopping for a mattress? I’d love to hear them!
