I grew up in a family where my father did all of the cooking. His mother owned a restaurant and inevitably he learned to create fantastic dishes. My mother, however, knows about as much as cooking a meal as she does about fixing a car. I take after my mother. I never intentionally set out to marry a man with culinary skills. But since we often marry the person that resembles one of our parents, (in my case, my father), it was fortunate for both of us that my husband cooks.
I’ve had many kitchen mishaps. When my husband and I were dating, I decided to cook him a very simple pasta dish. There is nothing simple about the kitchen. The meal was going great until I went to drain the pasta…right down the sink. I’ve burned my fair share of dishes. There’s nothing fantastic about that. One of the funniest and worst meals I set out to make was a simple fettucini alfredo. Being lactose intolerant I decided to sub soy milk. No one told me that Vanilla Soy Milk wasn’t an acceptable alternative. When we sat down to eat that night my husband asked me why the pasta was so sweet. I thought it was a compliment. We ordered out that night. These days I leave the cooking up to him.
