2012 is the year for super heroes! Marvel’s The Avengers (the third highest-grossing film ever) has already set a record for having the biggest opening weekend and being the fastest film to gross $1 billion world wide. This week, Sony will release The Amazing Spider-Man in theaters nationwide and is also predicted to open strong.
For weeks, my son has been asking to see the film. Spidey is his favorite character, and over the weekend, we headed to Walmart to pick up some shoes (Spider-Man, of course). While we shopped, my son spent some time exploring the latest Augmented Reality App based on the film.
Similar to Walmart’s Superhero Augmented Reality App, players can download the free Web-Slinger Augmented Reality mobile app via the iTunes App Store or Android Market for an in-store gaming experience. This AR app is much improved from the previous Avengers-themed app. I found that it didn’t take as long to download or initialize (although it still took more time than most apps). It’s also an app that takes up quite a bit of memory (over 200 MB) which is one reason it might be “slow.” I highly recommend downloading the app prior to going into the store.
There are two components to the app: a gaming mode and a photo capture mode. The concept of augmented reality is innovative and my son really likes the “scavenger hunt” feel to the game. You should plan on spending some time at your local Walmart to unlock various levels/weapons at locations throughout the store. You can play the game up to a certain point but you’ll have to be inside the store to continue playing (which is the one feature I wish could be changed since you can’t play the game otherwise).
The app will tell you which locations within the store you should visit but here is a list for your convenience:
Kellogg’s Cheez-It & Pop-Tarts displays in grocery
Straight Talk Wireless section in electronics
Signs located in toys and boys apparel.
The photo capture mode is our favorite and I felt like there was definite improvement in this feature. When you visit the display in the toys section, you can take pictures with Spidey and it’s easier to get a clear photo!
Disclosure: I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.
