I’m one of those moms…the ones that actually allows their children to watch a limited amount of carefully selected, age-appropriate DVDs. I tried to oblige by the AAP’s recommendation to avoid the terrible tube…but I succumbed. In the midst, I discovered that there are wonderful programs designed to educate and entertain. And they work!
The first time I put That Baby DVD on for my son, he happened to be really fussy. It was lunch time and I was unable to get him to eat. As soon as he heard the harmonic melodies of Happiness Runs/Circle Game and the tranquil images of trees and butterflies, he stopped, eyes peeled to the screen. By the time the silly puppets were swaying to When We Grow Up, he was squealing and laughing. Now when I turn it on, he starts bouncing up and down. This is MY new favorite DVD! And it’s not because I can get dishes done or a load of laundry folded while he’s watching (I know, I know…bad mommy!). A few days ago I put the That Baby DVD on for my son and noticed something I had not before. When the Letters and Numbers segments were on, my son was imitating the sounds after each number or letter. You don’t know how that makes a mom feel when she hears her son trying to speak. Tears welled up in my eyes. Now this isn’t the first time he’s tried to speak. But at 10 months old his vocabulary is still limited to “dada”, “duh” (duck), and a few others. I know that the AAP doesn’t feel that babies can learn from television viewing but my son has proven otherwise. I want to thank MotherTalk and That Baby for the opportunity to review this special program. We have gained so much from it.
That Baby DVD is an enriching program incorporating music from popular artists like Fleetwood Mac, Natalie Merchant, Joni Mitchell, and The Pretenders with fun, vivid images. The acoustic and vocal arrangements have been remixed to appeal to children age 0-5. My son is starting to mimic emotions and he seems captivated by the twirling, guitar-playing, bubble-blowing antics of the kids in the video having a good time. My favorite? Their remix of The Pretenders’ Brass in Pocket! If you’d like to watch a preview, check out their website. You can also purchase the soundtrack, That Baby CD, to accompany this program.

I’m all about the DVDs…I feel like I have to defend my position to other crunchy moms though. I studied TV production in university though so I can’t forget my roots.
