I remember when my husband and I announced to our families that we were expecting our first child. The joy and excitement that ensued was almost uncontainable. Both of our parents began talking about names, who our son would look like, what each one wanted to contribute and how often they’d get to see him. For my parents who lived close to us, it was easy to make regular visits so that they could spend quality time with both of our children. The challenge was my husband’s family, including his parents, who live over 2,000 miles away.
We had used Skype on occasion, prior to the birth of our children, but it wasn’t until my son was born that we became regular users. The ability to video chat with my children’s grandparents is as close to them being here as possible. Their visits are limited due to distance, but they can see, hear, and speak to our children every day if we desired…for free! Not only has this helped my in laws feel like they are part of our lives, it has helped our children remember who their grandparents are so that when it comes time to visit, they feel a connection. I have to admit that because we live in a society dominated by technology, my husband and I don’t write letters and cards nearly as often as we used to. We love the fact that our children don’t have to wait to communicate with their grandparents via letters and greeting cards.
For the next several weeks, I’ll be sharing more information about how we use Skype, and how this innovative software is connecting friends, family, co-workers and people thousands of miles away. I am most familiar with Skype as a way to video chat via my laptop, iPad, and iPhone. But Skype is so much more than this and over the next few months, I’ll be exploring and sharing some of the software’s other features including conference calling, group calling, and mobile/landline calls.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit Skype on Facebook, I encourage you to do so since they offer a free app called Say It With Skype that allows you to send a free video greeting! Since this month we’re celebrating moms, if you send a “Mom You Rock” video, Skype will donate $1 to Save the Children’s Global Action Fund to support the new MomsTheWord.org camapaign.
Have you ever used Skype? What questions do you have about the software? I’d love to hear your feedback!
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Skype. I received Skype credits to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for participating
