To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment. ~Jane Austen
Hiking…boating…ziplining…
These are definitely not the types of activities that come to mind when I think about vacationing in Orlando. Florida is green, lush, and rich in plant and wildlife, yet many families never see beyond the gates of Orlando’s iconic theme parks. During my 5 day stay with Disney, Global Resort Homes, and Visit Kissimmee, I got a glimpse of how much there really is to see and do beyond the parks.
The day before we headed home, we took a leisurely boat ride to Makinson Island, located in Lake Tohopekaliga, Kissimmee. The 132-acre island, which is now a county park, offers visitors hiking trails and opportunities to see a variety of wildlife including eagles, owls, deer, and more. Families can make the trip a half or full day outing. I’d like to go back and picnic after taking a leisurely hike.
The island is only accessible by boat and tours can be arranged through Visit Kissimmee. Here are some photos I captured on our half day outing.

Before we had kids we used to do all kinds of outdoorsy stuff in the Orlando area. I love to kayak and boat and there is no better way to experience nature than up close and persona.

Those trees are kind of creepy looking. Do you know what kind they are? I’ve never been very far south, so I’m not familiar with anything from there. The water looks nice and I can only imagine how peaceful it was compared to the theme parks!
