In a country of such affluence, it’s astounding to me that today, in 2012, more than 50 million Americans do not know where their next meal will come from. Hunger isn’t a statistic in a third world country…it’s an unfortunate reality here in the US. Even in Orange County, home to some of the most wealthy, sees 456,000 people at risk every month.
This Spring, Walmart has partnered with Kellogg’s, General Mills, Kraft and ConAgra to help close the hunger gap. During this particular season, food banks traditionally see a decrease in donations, the result being a lack of resources to help meet the needs of the communities they serve. Through these partnerships, Walmart aims to provide 42 million meals to food banks across the country. When you visit your local store, you’ll likely find a section devoted to the campaign, Fighting Hunger Together, and eligible products will be labeled with an identifying sticker. Additionally, many stores will have a place to donate food items so there is no need to go to your local food bank if that isn’t feasible.
Walmart also launched an app this month on Facebook which offers it’s fans information on volunteering and donating to help fight hunger. When users go to the app, they can vote on one of 200 communities Walmart has designated as having the highest rates of unemployment to receive funding.
There are several things you and I can do this Spring to fight hunger. Whether it’s helping to raise awareness, volunteering at a local food bank, or making food or monetary donations, each person can make a difference to help Fight Hunger this season.
