For as long as I’ve been purchasing appliances, I’ve made it a point to invest in those that are Energy Star rated. What this means is that those products “meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy” and save consumers money while protecting the environment. Beyond the Energy Star rating, I also look for appliances that will last for a number of years while saving me time and money.
Whirlpool‘s new Duet Laundry Pair has not only simplified my laundry regimen, it’s helped me approach the household task in a smarter, more efficient manner. Because I am passionate about reducing our carbon footprint as a family, the efficiency of the machines was important to me. In addition to the appliances’ Energy Star rating, both work together to make the process of washing and drying clothes more efficient by using faster spin speeds in the washer and sensors in the dryer. The Duet is the industry’s most efficient laundry pair. Using both machines results in a reduction in the amount of water, energy, and detergent used, the result being a savings of up to $3,300 in lifetime energy costs and 12,857 gallons of water each year!
Without having to do a thing, the Duet Laundry Pair washes and dries clothing in the most efficient manner. Sensors determine how much detergent and water are necessary for effective cleaning and how much heat is needed to dry those items. No more guessing at how small or large a load is…or how much detergent is needed. Effortless. Smart. Efficient.
If you want to give your regimen an “eco boost”, simply use the EcoBoost setting, which reduces the water temperature and increases agitation (tumbling). Clothes are cleaned as effectively as they would be without EcoBoost, but the machine uses less energy. Utilizing the eco cycle on the dryer will also boost energy savings. And rather than having to dial in a timed dry cycle, the Duet dryer houses sensors that can determine when clothes are dry so that it can shut off and save energy. The only noticeable difference when using the eco cycles is an increase in both wash and dry time.
The Duet Laundry Pair are high efficiency, large capacity machines. Combine that with their 6th Sense Technology and the washer’s precise detergent dispensing system and my laundry regimen is effortlessly efficient.
Want to further increase the efficiency of your laundry regimen and reduce your carbon footprint?
1. Opt for a biodegradable, phosphate-free detergent derived from plant and vegetable-based ingredients.
2. Replace conventional fabric softener with white vinegar
3. Wash in cold water
4. Opt for concentrated laundry detergents with less packaging
Here is a short video I created on the washer:
I wrote this review while participating in a test-drive campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Whirlpool and received a complimentary Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer to facilitate my review.

The Duet sounds pretty cool! I think it is always worth the money to go with energy efficient appliances. As you mentioned, it improves the carbon footprint, and it also reduces cost. How much better could it get than that?
Suzanne
Radically reducing the use of chemicals in personal care and cleaning.
