I was the girl that took AP classes, carried a book with her wherever she went, and achieved a Master’s degree in her twenties. If time allowed, I would still be in school, soaking in all there is to know as I believe in a lifetime of learning.
I haven’t been in a classroom in quite some time, however, according to a recent survey (results achieved via Sylvan), America may be experiencing an algebra crisis with 66% of parents believing that American students fall behind when compared to other nations. Despite the fact that we don’t often talk about algebra, it’s actually more relevant than many think. For example, as an RN, I had to take numerous math and science classes where knowledge of algebra was required.
Sylvan, a company known for it’s learning centers and learning programs recently developed the Fit 4 Algebra screener to help parents understand if their child is ready for algebra. The 21 question screening tool, designed for youth in junior high or early high school, takes just 20-30 minutes and offers parents an evaluation of his/her child’s strengths and areas for improvement. The evaluation is broken down by areas and lessons are offered to help improve those areas.
I actually completed the screening tool since my children are not ready for algebra and I have to say it was a challenge. I haven’t taken algebra in many years but I do believe the screening tool can be valuable for helping parents and their children work together so that they are ready for the rigors of high school algebra. Algebra is a subject students will see beyond high school and it’s important for parents to work with their child to achieve success.
I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Sylvan Learning and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
