Sleep…Oh how I love sleep. I remember when sleeping a solid 8 or 9 hours was the norm. These days, my only hopes of getting a full night’s sleep are those rare occasions when I travel. Except, when I travel, I’m sleeping alone…in a strange bed…without my squishy pillow. I know…I digressed.
For the last 2 months (wow!), the hubby and I all four of us have been sleeping on Serta’s brand new iComfort Sleep System. You may remember my post about my experience in Chicago touring Serta’s headquarters and learning not only about their new mattress, but about the way they make all of their mattresses. That experience was enlightening and informative, but actually sleeping on the mattress for a period of time has really helped me appreciate the importance of finding the right fit.
Unlike most reviews, I took my time with this one. After all, the decision to purchase a mattress is one that I don’t take lightly and requires thought and research. I’ve only purchased two other mattresses in my lifetime, and neither decision was made sporadically. Initially, I thought about my current mattress and what I did and did not like about it (I even made a list!). I also thought about my current state of sleep and how rested I generally felt upon awakening. The combination of factual information, comparison among mattresses, trusted reviews, and my own sleep needs guided my decision in all 3 instances.
When I was offered the opportunity to review Serta’s new iComfort Sleep System, I had a difficult time deciding which one to select. There are four different models plus the option of adding an adjustable frame (which will be covered in a subsequent post). Here is a quick summary of the four models available:
Prodigy
This model offers luxury, comfort and support and is the only bed to feature Serta’s Cool Reaction Slow Recovery Latex Foam which complements the Cool Action Gel Memory Foam. This is the bed we selected in a King size and it’s roomy, plush, and supportive.
Revolution
This model features advanced support and supreme comfort. The bed includes a layer of KoolComfort Memory Foam which works with the Cool Action Gel Memory Foam to conform and contour to your body while relieving pressure points and offering targeted support.
Genius
Combining plush comfort and extra firm support, the bed features a 2 inch layer of Serta Support Foam below the Cool Action Gel Memory Foam for a firm sleep surface. This is the ideal bed for those who prefer a firm mattress but desire the benefits of memory foam.
Insight
This model offers all of the benefits of Serta’s Cool Action Gel Memory Foam while providing contouring, pressure-relieving support.
So why did we ultimately decide on the Prodigy?
I recently talked about how my husband and I are opposites in many ways. When it comes to sleep, we’re like night and day (giggle). He likes it cool (as in arctic) and I like it toasty. He prefers a firm mattress, I prefer a something soft and plush, yet supportive. Neither of us had ever slept on a Memory Foam mattress, so we went to a local store in our area and tested several of the iComfort models out. As a side note, mattress shopping with the hubby was so much fun. We bounced and pretended to sleep and giggled and acted like kids. If it weren’t for the salesmen trying to sell us a mattress, we might have been those monkeys you read about in storybooks. : )
Despite our differences, we settled on the Prodigy with an adjustable frame and neither of us have regretted that decision. For weeks I had been telling my son about the new bed, so when it arrived, he was very excited. I should mention that both my husband and I had every intention of finally bribing persuading helping our son make the transition to his own bed with the arrival of our new iComfort Sleep System. But alas, we have failed. This photo perfectly depicts how our children have completely taken over the bed.
Every mattress I’ve ever slept on has required some adjustment. With memory foam, there isn’t any “breaking in” of the mattress. Fortunately, it only took about a week for me to really feel like I was getting supportive, comfortable sleep. Again, it had nothing to do with the mattress and more to do with me being used to sleeping on an entirely different type of mattress.
So why choose an iComfort Sleep System?
People looking to improve the quality of their sleep often consider investing in a memory foam mattress. Not only do these types of mattresses provide optimal support, they won’t lose their shape or develop depressions over time.
While there are many benefits to memory foam, heat retention is often cited as a drawback. Serta reinvented memory foam with the development of the iComfort Sleep System. These mattresses feature a Cool Action Gel Memory Foam, infused with the support and cooling touch of Serta’s MicroSupport gel. This technology is designed to deliver optimal pressure relief and targeted support while sleeping cooler.
Both the hubby and I absolutely love our mattress. It’s supportive, comfortable, breathable, and beautiful (yes, it looks nice!). I appreciate the fact that when the hubby tosses and turns, I don’t wake up (the toddler wanting to nurse at 3 am? Totally different issue). He appreciates the fact that on those nights when I want to sleep with the windows closed, he’s not roasting. We both feel like the mattress is very supportive and helps us make the most out of our interrupted sleep (totally temporary, I hear).
Investing in a mattress is an important decision. When you consider that this one purchase will determine the next 10…20… years, you want to ensure that your decision is well-researched and thought out. Serta understands that purchasing a mattress is a very individual decision. Because they believe in the quality of their mattresses, they offer a 120 day risk-free trial. If after 30 nights you are not satisfied with the quality of your sleep, you may exchange or return the mattress (please see individual retailer for specifics on this policy).
