Before the hubby and I had children, we spent almost one year traveling all over Europe. Both of us have a passion for travel and we don’t let the fact that we have kids hinder that. I prefer to travel with my family, but I’ve had some amazing opportunities arise recently which have resulted in having to travel solo a little more than I normally do. As you might expect, these short trips don’t typically allow for any sightseeing. However, on two occasions, I’ve had the opportunity to spend a few hours exploring the actual city.
A few weeks ago, I spent approximately 48 hours in New York City. There aren’t many cities that I would like to live in apart from our current home, but New York City is one of them. It’s a city I can visit frequently and never do or see the same thing twice. I can think of 20 things I’d like to do in New York City, but on this particular trip, I could only do a couple. So…I decided that I wanted to eat really good food, see a Broadway show, and either shop or tour one of the museums.
Last year when we were in New York City, both the hubby and I wanted to eat at the iconic Shake Shack, but never made it. Since the hotel I was staying at was right next door to the famed burger joint (and it was raining like crazy!), I decided to check it out! While I don’t eat beef, I did get a pretty delicious grilled cheese sandwich and a Fair Shake made with Fair Trade Coffee (YUM!). My food experiences are such an integral part of my travel memories and I suggest that whether you spend a week or just a few hours that you make it memorable and eat somewhere amazing.
A visit to the city isn’t complete without taking in a Broadway (or off-Broadway) show. My lovely, talented friend, who happens to be an amazing singer/actress, suggested I see How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The show, which stars Daniel Radcliffe (from Harry Potter) and John Larroquette (from Night Court), was phenomenal. It’s a story about climbing the corporate ladder, office romances, and learning the balance between business and pleasure. The music is outstanding, the cast heartwarming, and the story lighthearted. Hat tip: The theater offers a limited number of $30 rush tickets a few hours prior to each performance. But get their early! I scored a seat in the 7th row for $30!!!!!
With just a short amount of time, it was either shop in SoHo or visit one of the museums in the city. I opted to spend half a day at the Museum of Modern Art. As you might expect, the museum houses “the world’s finest collection of modern and contemporary art.” Picasso, Monet, and Renoir are just a few of my favorite artists on display at the museum.
Overall, it was a fabulous trip, complete with an upscale dining adventure at Ça Va Todd English. While it’s not feasible for West Coasters like myself to venture across the country for 48 hours, I definitely think I’d make frequent trips up to the city if I lived in one of the neighboring states.
If nothing else, be sure to walk through Times Square, Central Park, and the church adjacent to Ground Zero.
If you had 48 hours in New York City, what would you do?
No compensation at all was received for this post. But if it weren’t for Hellmann’s, I would not have had the opportunity to take such a trip. I paid for my meals, show tickets, and museum admission.
