I’ve lived in Southern California my entire life, and am still amazed at the sheer number of unique ideas for a day or night out. With summer close, the movies will be hopping with Blockbuster films. But why not stroll off the beaten path and take in a live show?
Battle of the Dance, which debuted in Anaheim in February, features an international cast of professional dancers bringing the world of dance to life through color, light, music, and movement. Fashioned after the popular Son Amar dinner show in Mallorca, Spain, Battle of the Dance represents the “artistic embodiment of the changing relationship between Spain and Ireland during the Spanish Armada.”
After you’ve had a chance to enjoy some pre-show serenading and your soup or salad, the lights dim as the stage is set for the battle. International and local dancers perform in a variety of dance genres including Flamenco, Celtic, Pop, and Bollywood. I couldn’t help but be awestruck by their effortless precision. Interspersed throughout these powerful numbers are variety acts such as stand-up comedy, acrobatics, ventriloquism, and shadow artistry. But don’t be mistaken…these performers will make you laugh or leave you speechless.
The main course, which features Filet Mignon or Fish Du Jour, is served during the show. I might have preferred to at least have the meal in front of me prior to the lights dimming for the show. The meal itself was delicious, particularly when you consider the sheer number of people they aim to feed each night.
As I mentioned above, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the entertainment. Both of my children, who were in attendance, were captivated by the dancing and amused by the ventriloquist. Had it not been for the later show-time, I believe they would have remained attentive the entire time.
Battle of the Dance currently run Monday through Thursday at 7:30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM, and Sunday at 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Entertainment and appetizers begin one hour before show-time in the lobby so be sure to plan accordingly.
