To this day, my mother is my best friend. She supports, encourages and inspires me to be the wife, mother, and woman I am today. This weekend, we spent the day together enjoying afternoon tea and a show at the Geffen Playhouse. As a UCLA alumni, I was excited about frequenting the venue for the very first time. The Playhouse, which as been awarded more than 40 regional awards, “strives to produce original, quality works that inspire thought, evoke conversation and engage the community in the live arts.”
It seemed fitting that my mother and I were to see a play about motherhood. More than a dozen playwrights came together to share their personal stories for In Mother Words, a humorous and inspiring journey through motherhood. The show begins where it should…in the delivery room with your typical “get the baby out” and “what am I going to do with the baby now that it’s out” phenomenon. But the vignettes span a multitude of parenting challenges that aren’t always discussed in Mommy and Me groups or on the playground. Coming of age and the empty nest syndrome are universally experienced by most mothers. But how many moms feel comfortable discussing the challenges of an adoptive family, raising a child with autism or helping a child deal with confusion about sexual orientation?
Unlike traditional shows or films about motherhood, In Mother Words gives voice to the non-traditional family. Regardless of race, age, religion or gender, motherhood and all that it entails, is universal. The show is raw, unadulterated (hence some language) and incredibly moving. You don’t have to be a mother to appreciate it, because the show unites the audience in that most of us have or have had a maternal figure in our life. Be prepared to laugh and reminisce about your own journey and experiences with motherhood…and be prepared to cry as you relive some of those moments in your life.
You can see In Mother Words at the Geffen Playhouse through May 1st, 2011. You can save 15% off any performance by using the code IMWPC15.
