Last fall, Walt Disney Pictures released Secretariat, which depicts the remarkable true story of a racehorse and his owner. Secretariat was not your typical racehorse. He was “the greatest racehorse of all time,” setting records that have yet to be broken. The film is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and movie download, complete with deleted scenes and director’s commentary. For those of you who’ve yet to see the film, here is a brief synopsis:
Behind every legend, lies an impossible dream. Witness the spectacular journey of an incredible horse named Secretariat and the moving story of his unlikely owner, a housewife who risked everything to make him a champion.
I was moved to tears when I saw the film for the first time. I never imagined I would become so engaged in both the story and the art of horse racing. Diane Lane’s character is strong and unwavering. Her confidence in Secretariat stems from her relationship with the magnificent horse.
Visually, the movie is stunning. I grew up going to the races but never got as close to the horses as the filmmakers bring the audience. Director Wallace “wanted to bring audiences onto the track, inside the races themselves…to experience [them] as a participant, rather than a spectator.” There is something raw and organic about the pounding of hooves…Secretariat breathing…even silence…
Disney authentically told the story of the great Secretariat. Audiences will come away inspired and moved.
