As a nurse, I’m rarely offended by “body talk.” Everyone poops, belches, and passes gas…and now children can get hands on with the “impolite” science of the human body at Discovery Science Center’s latest exhibit appropriately titled, Grossology. Based on the best-selling book by the same name, Grossology uses “sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits” to help children explore the science behind runny noses, body odor, our digestive system, and more.
Every weekend throughout the duration of the exhibit (through September 12), be sure to visit the Ask the Experts Stage Show which explains why the body performs impolite but necessary functions like passing gas, urination, and sneezing. On August 14th, Dr. Sears will talk about keeping kids healthy and will give away Sinupret, an herbal sinus product my son uses whenever he is starting to get sick (it works incredibly well!). Sinupret will also bring their blue elephant (which my son has met at other events) for a meet and greet and the Red Cross will have a table set up to talk about the importance of blood donation.
Here is a run through of the interactive experiences you’ll find this summer at Grossology:
- Take a “Tour du Nose” to explore 10 nasal features, including how your snoot acts as an air filter, a smell sensor and a mucus producer.
- Play the pinball game “Gas Attack” by scoring off bumpers dressed up as food items that cause gas.
- Mimic the build up of acid indigestion by causing the “Burp Machine” to release a giant belch.
- Explore the role of the kidney in a virtual reality experience in “Urine: The Game.”
- Take a ride on the GI slide, climb a large-scale replica of human skin, and discover other mysterious ways your body’s biology does what it needs to do to keep you healthy.

From authentic body smells to real x-rays, this is perhaps the most unique way of learning about the body I’ve come across. And..children will enjoy the highly interactive nature of the exhibit. For tickets and information, just visit the Discovery Science Center.

We had this come and visit us and we didn’t go. Looks like the kids missed out on something fun. I’ll have to take them next time it comes. I was honestly a little worried that I would be grossed out.

I am kind of squeamish but I think this is really cool! Great for kids. Maybe if this was around when I was a kid, I wouldn’t be so squeamish 😛 lol!
Hehe!! I’m a nurse so nothing really bothers me like this….but it was kind of icky in general….but a great way for kids to learn! : )
