9 Things You Didn’t Know About Twilight Zone Tower of Terror + Disneyland Giveaway!

Posted by Caryn Bailey 154 Comments

{No compensation was received for this post. Consideration and giveaway tickets provided by the Disneyland Resort}

The first time I rode Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and interestingly enough, the park is home to the original ride. As intimidating as it seemed standing tall at 199 feet, I knew that my time at Walt Disney World was limited, so I “checked in” to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at the haunted hotel and experienced a part of history.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror – A Classic Attraction from a Classic Show

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was inspired by and based on the popular CBS series The Twilight Zone, which aired in the 50’s and 60’s.  The mystery that surrounds the haunted hotel begins one stormy Halloween night in 1939 where 5 souls mysteriously disappear from the hotel’s doomed elevator when a storm strikes the building. There disappearance is still a mystery and when the hotel closed that night, it was and continues to remain abandoned. Today, you can take a tour of the infamous Hollywood Tower Hotel to unravel the mystery…if you dare!

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Makes Way for Guardians of the Galaxy

You might have heard that Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will soon close its doors in anticipation of the Disneyland Resort’s latest attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Debuting in 2017, this new experience will take guests through a fortress-like museum of the mysterious Collector who is keeping his newest acquisitions as prisoners. Board a gantry lift as you are launched into a daring adventure along with Rocket Raccoon to free the Guardians of the Galaxy. The new attraction will transform the structure that houses The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror complete with new visual and audio effects for a variety of ride experiences. The ride will also feature multiple, random, unique profiles where the rise and fall of the gantry lift rocks to the beat of the music inspired by the film’s soundtrack.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is scheduled to make its final drop on January 2nd, 2017. If you’ve yet to experience this thrilling attraction or you want to check in to the Hollywood Tower Hotel before it closes for good, be sure to visit the Disneyland Resort during Halloween Time and the Holidays. As a special treat during the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Final Check-Out Celebration, if you arrive after twilight, you’ll have an opportunity to enter the fifth dimension in complete darkness. This free-fall in the hotel’s haunted elevator with the lights out is a first and something you don’t want to miss!

Facts You May not Know About Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

To celebrate the end of an era, here are 9 Things You Didn’t Know About Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

  • The ride stands at 183 feet tall, making it the tallest building in Anaheim.
  • Guests board the basement elevator, rise to the rooftop, and drop 13 stories moving faster than the speed of gravity.
  • The landscaping at Tower of Terror was designed to reflect that of an upscale hotel in 1930s Southern California. Tall grass and dead palm fronds contribute to the “unkempt-by-design” look indicating a hotel that has been abandoned for many years.
  • The hotel lobby displays items left behind by the guests who suddenly and mysteriously disappeared including dusty wine glasses, an unfinished postcard and a child’s doll.
  • In the glass display cases just outside of The Library, you’ll find props from 2 Twilight Zone episodes including a gold thimble from “The After Hours” and a broken stopwatch from “A Kind of a Stopwatch”.
  • While you wait to check in to the hotel, you can chat with the bellhops to hear stories about the Haunted Hotel.
  • The costumes worn by the bellhops are similar to those worn by hotel staff in the 1930s, including the pillbox hat.
  • The music heard in the hotel courtyard and lobby features jazz and popular tunes from the 1930s.
  • The Twilight Zone episode from which Rod Serling’s appearance in the Library scene was taken is called “It’s a Good Life” and tells the story of a little boy who can read minds and control people.

They have always talked about going, love the Disney characters and I know- would have the times of their little lives! I would even get to dress up my little Princess!!! So my daughter had a ruptured appendix three weeks ago and just thought she felt achy. She was in the hospital for a full week getting her stabilized once we figured it out and had surgery to remove her abscess, which was 10 days of drain in. She’ll have to go back in November to have it removed, which was when we were going to go to say goodbye to Tower. We’re not a sad story, we have been to Disneyland, she is alright right now, but we could have lost her, so at this point our family is working on whims to enjoy life as much as possible. This would be a sweet spot trip where she is healed enough for rides but before her next surgery.
