It isn’t uncommon for people to assume my mother and I are sisters. A combination of genetics, ethnicity, and impeccable self-care have helped her age gracefully, and I’m thankful that I seem to be following suit. During my college years, when I would come home for a visit and collapse in exhaustion from too many late nights, my mother would remind me that sleep is one of the most important things I could do to look and feel youthful. While I still find myself working at half past dark on occasion, I’ve been more diligent about giving my body the rest it needs to rejuvenate.
Many working women and multi-tasking moms invest so intently in their work and family life, that they often neglect the self-care that is so vital to carry out these roles. Nursing impressed upon me the importance of taking care of my body and those closest to me empowered and inspired me to value emotional and psychosocial health.
We’re a quarter of the way through the new year, which means that life is most likely busier. If the stress of work and household responsibilities and shuttling your kids off to school and sports is weighing on you, give yourself permission to focus on you for a moment. Here are 8 things women can do to take care of themselves:
- Sleep: The physical benefits of restoration should compel you to prioritize sleep. This time where you body is repairing itself is essential for overall well-being and can help improve mood, concentration, and more.
- Hydrate: With our body comprised of 60% water, it makes sense that it needs to replace what has been lost through other systems throughout the day. Aim for 8 eight-ounce glasses of water every single day.
- Get Moving: Exercise is as important for your physical health as it is for your mental health. Find an activity you love and an accountability partner who will motivate you to do what you love when you don’t feel like it and you’ll soon realize positive changes in your mood, deeper, more-restful sleep, and sustained energy.
- Eat the Rainbow: More than a “healthy diet,” your body thrives on a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to get the vitamins and minerals it needs naturally. Strive to cook most of your meals at home and include an expansive selection of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to maintain a healthy weight and prevent the diseases associated with a poor diet.
- Supplement When Appropriate: I am one of the many women do not get enough Calcium and Vitamin D in their diet because of an intolerance to dairy. My physician recommended that I supplement daily, so I picked up a bottle of Nature Made’s Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc at Walmart a couple of weeks ago after my annual physical. Right now, you can join Nature Made’s 30-Day Healthy Habit Program for free and receive motivation and tips designed for your specific health goals. And, if you sign up for the challenge, you’ll be entered to win a grand prize of $5,000*.
- Engage Your Mind: Read a book, do a crossword puzzle or take up a new skill to keep your mind as active as your body.
- Take Time For You: Every woman needs periods of restoration in order to continue pouring herself out for her job, her passions, her home, and her relationships. Schedule a monthly massage or facial, an evening out at the movies, lunch at your favorite restaurant, or absolutely nothing as you would a client meeting or your child’s soccer game and commit to doing something for yourself regularly.
- Invest in Quality Relationships: A strong support system of family and friends is essential, particularly during life transitions such as having a baby, moving, or starting a new job. We were designed for relationships and there is tremendous value in doing life together.
