After watching one too many Your Baby Can Read videos, I would have felt guilty had I not started reading to my kids the moment they were born. There were many days I felt like I was reading to myself. But as I peer through the rear view mirror on our drive home, both kids immersed in stories of espionage and the day-to-day happenings of a middle school-aged boy, I know that my efforts were not in vain.
Reading the Classics to the Kids with Eric Carle
When my kids were old enough to begin reading, we started with simple picture books like Eric Carle’s award-winning masterpiece The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The renowned author and illustrator has received numerous awards including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award and the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contribution to American Children’s Literature.
Eric Carle’s “Very” series includes stories about hope, work, love, belonging, and persistence and take children on imaginative journeys of discovery. His stories reflect his love for nature and inspire children through recurring themes like friendship, creativity and imagination. Each of the 5 books in the series was illustrated by Carle in his hand-painted tissue paper collage technique, inviting kids into each insect’s colorful world.
