We’re nearly through the first month of 2014, so it’s time for me evaluate my progress towards my “resolutions.” While I wasn’t too specific, my goals this year were to increase the amount of times I exercise each week and eat wholesome, minimally processed foods most days of the week. Getting in regular time at the gym has always been a struggle for me, and with sick kids, a husband who’s job can require long, unpredictable hours, and a sudden influx of work projects, it hasn’t been easy to fit in my workouts. What I need is motivation, a schedule, and some accountability! Here are my 7 tips to help you stay motivated and consistent with your fitness routine when life gets in the way:
1. Schedule Your Workouts: Like meetings, deadlines, and appointments, if I don’t put it on the calendar, it doesn’t get done. My husband and I share a Google calendar and this has been a great way for us to keep track of our schedules. It wasn’t until recently that I even thought about scheduling in my workout time. Now I have an alert set that reminds me to go to the gym!
2. Find a Workout Partner: To be honest, I’d rather work out alone. I don’t have a lot of time and if I were to go to the gym with a friend, I can imagine us making a day out of it talking, grabbing lunch, relaxing at the pool… But then I look back at the past month and realize that I did not even come close to realizing my fitness goals so perhaps a bit of accountability is in order. I haven’t found someone yet, but ideally, I’d like to find a friend who enjoys the same types of fitness activities and has like-minded goals so we can encourage each other towards success.
3. Use an Activity Tracker: Earlier this year, I reviewed Nintendo’s brand new Wii Fit U and every day, you’ll find my Fit Meter on my waist, tracking my activity. Even if I don’t make it to the gym, I take a glance at my progress and decide if I need to do more to at least hit my 10,000 steps goal.
4. Vary Your Routine: I’m a creature of habit and most days you’ll find me running on the treadmill because it is quick and effective. But for many, boredom sets in which makes it less likely to stick with regular exercise. Try a new class, a different machine, or simply a new running route to keep you motivated.
5. Work Out To Music: I can’t tell you how many times 30 or even 45 minutes has gone by on the treadmill without my realizing it simply because I was engrossed in my favorite playlist. Put together a variety of playlists with upbeat music, pack your earphones, and get to the gym! Now is a great time to invest in a new pair of earphones since yurbuds just launched their brand new Inspire Limited Edition Wireless Sport Earphones. Finding a good pair of earphones that actually fits and stays inside my ear has been challenging. And there is nothing more frustrating than having them fall out while I’m running as it interferes with my workout. These new wireless earphones are guaranteed to stay comfortably in place without pain or discomfort thanks to TwistLock Technology and a FlexSoft Comfort Fit. Simply pair your earphones to your device and you’re ready for your best workouts yet. Without cords to get in the way and a battery that will last you through the week, yurbuds can inspire you to meet your fitness goals and have your best workouts yet.
6. Reward Yourself: I’m not suggesting you work out simply to enjoy your favorite ice cream or piece of chocolate cake (because of course I would never do that), but there is something to be said about being nice to yourself when you’ve been successful. Whether it’s a something small like a new blouse or something bigger like a day at the spa, consider treating yourself when you’ve made it to the gym every week for a month (or whatever timeline works for you).
7. Forgive Yourself: There is nothing as demotivating as feeling like I’ve failed at accomplishing my goals. Sometimes, it can even be a deterrent to pressing on since it may feel like I’m never going to lose those extra 5 pounds or run that 10K. Resolve to “let go” of the fact that you didn’t meet your goals on a given week and commit to working harder.
