I always find myself crawling into bed in the wee hours of Christmas morning after a busy and eventful season of joy and merriment. I usually haven’t slept many hours, but on Christmas Day, I breathe a slight sigh of relief because I know that all of the shopping and baking and cleaning will result in laughter and hugs from my kids, making the whole sleepless, busyness that defines the Holidays worth it.
Busyness and sleeplessness seem to go hand-in-hand, and what I really want this Christmas is a good night’s sleep. But more than that, I want to enter 2016 with a resolve to make sleep the priority it deserves, because there are so many physical and emotional benefits to quality sleep. When I don’t sleep well or enough, I feel it. Beyond the physical effects, I tend to be more emotional and can’t think as clearly. Adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation, to function physically. But beyond the physical benefits, here are 7 Reasons You Need a Good Night’s Sleep every single night.

There are so many factors that go into achieving a good night’s sleep. Some of them are easily mediated while others may require a consultation with a professional. I find that going to bed at the same time each night helps ensure I get enough sleep. I also avoid caffeine several hours before bed, strive to exercise at least 4-5 times a week, and keep my room very dark, since I can be very sensitive to light. And because I have struggled with back and neck pain in the past due to my work as an RN, I have found that the proper bed and pillow can make the difference between sleeplessness and 8 hours of nocturnal bliss.
