My parents celebrated every holiday with fanfare and I always knew to expect balloons on my birthday, an abundant basket at Easter, and an evening of Christmas carols, eggnog, and tree trimming during the holidays. Holidays are in many ways defined by tradition, and yet, I always understood the truth behind those customs.
With Easter just a few days away, I thought I’d share my favorite Easter Traditions for Kids. These simple, family activities provide opportunities for children to use their imagination and creativity while learning about the true meaning of Easter.
- Dress the part. One of my fondest childhood memories is shopping with my mom, and while increasingly infrequent these days, it’s still an activity I enjoy as an adult. This year, I allowed my kids to pick out their own Easter outfits and used this opportunity to explain to them the importance of this holiday.
- Color eggs. The history of the painted egg varies from culture to culture and was often used to symbolize revival and new life. In some faiths, the egg is symbolic of the resurrection of Christ and families can utilize this time to teach children about the meaning of Easter.
- DIY Easter Basket. Add a personal touch to your Easter celebrations and include your child’s favorite toys and sweet treats. Express yourself with Russell Stover’s “Sayings” Premium Milk Chocolate Easter Bars (also perfect if you forgot a card). Don’t forget your favorite creative touches like Easter eggs, grass, and a plush rabbit.
- Tell the Easter Cookie Story. Faith is an integral part of our Easter celebrations, and one way we reinforce the meaning and sanctity of this holiday is to make Easter Story Cookies. Children resonate with hands-on lessons, and this particular one offers a joyful, tasty surprise at the end.
- Celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. Going to church on Easter morning is a tradition that resonates with many families across the country. This is an opportunity to remember the reason whey we celebrate and connects friends and family members through shared beliefs.
- Hunt for Eggs. Simple and engaging, this traditional Easter activity encourages kids to get outside and use their super sleuthing skills to find eggs filled with surprises. Since we fill our kids’ baskets with candy, I typically put money in their Easter eggs, hide them, then write out a set of clues to guide their search.
- Share a Meal Together. Brunch is my favorite Easter tradition and one that I spend great effort on. I absolutely love to cook for my family, and sharing a meal together is one way to further cement our bond and show my love for them.
What are your favorite Easter traditions? I’d love to hear about how you’ll celebrate the upcoming holiday!
