5 Tips for Navigating the New School Year

Every year around this time, we’ll spend half a day shopping for the new school year. Along with refreshing the kids’ wardrobe and picking out First Day of School Outfits, I try to shop and plan for lunches, our morning routine and the supplies requested by their school. Because I stay organized, I avoid the stress of last-minute shopping which is often exacerbated by crowds, lines, and limited inventory. In order to help you navigate the new school year, I’ve put together my Best Tips for Navigating the New School Year.

School Supplies For Girls

1. Shop Early: I find that much of my stress during this season comes from rushing around at the last minute. Over the past few years, I’ve started shopping at my local Walmart as soon as our school supply lists are posted online. This ensures we have the most expansive selection of supplies, backpacks and lunch boxes available, particularly when my kids are both requesting the most popular character-themed back to school gear.

2. Make a List: It seems easy enough, but I’ve found myself shopping on a whim all too often only to come home and realize that I’ve purchased little to nothing that I intended to. Additionally, you’ll want to visit Classrooms by Walmart to download your school’s supply list.

3. Take Inventory: Before you shop for the new school year, be sure to look through your kids’ closets to determine what apparel items they can use again for the season. You’ll also want to peruse your home office or your kids’ homework space to assess whether any school supplies can be used for the new school year.

4. Meal Plan: I should be a pro at juggling all of the morning tasks that are required to get two little people out of the house. However, Summer has a way of creating amnesia and I struggle the first few weeks trying to re-acclimate to structure and routine. I’m not a meal planner by nature, but in the first few weeks of the new school year, I have found it helpful to have a plan that tells me exactly what our family will eat each day. Meal planning offers so many benefits to busy families and can help save money at the grocery store (since you know exactly what you will and won’t be purchasing) and time.

5. Begin the School Routine Before the First Day: What makes Summer so enjoyable is the lack of structure and routine. Adventure and impulsivity can’t be contained, which is why it’s often difficult for children to make the switch. If possible, adjust your kids’ bedtimes back 30 minutes every few days until you’re back on schedule. You might also consider setting aside time for reading or writing in preparation for the season of weekly homework.
