The first time I wore my hair curly to an event, the response was overwhelmingly positive, with many of my friends surprised at the amount of time and effort I exert to get my hair straight. I’ve been straightening my hair for over 20 years, and the combination of genetics, my cultural background, and the heat and chemicals I use on my hair make it highly prone to frizz. Southern California has experienced a number of days with temperatures over 100, and combined with the increase in humidity, my hair has been incredibly challenging to style.
For years, I’ve straightened my hair, and while I’ve been trying to embrace my curls, it’s still a rarity to find me wearing my hair au natural. Unfortunately, a high humidity index means that when I walk outside, my hair begins to curl. Between traveling to regions known for being particularly humid during the summer and spending much of our in more humid environments like the beach, I’ve put together 5 Tips for Fighting Frizz In Humidity!
- Invest in quality hair care products. A few weeks ago, I picked up OGX’s Kukui Oil Shampoo, Conditioner and Anti-Frizz Hydrating Oil from my local Walmart. The line features an exotic formula that includes Hawaii’s ancient secret kukui nut oil-infused blend for hair that is smooth, free from frizz, and resistant to the effects of humidity. At under $6 each, this is a professional line that is worked well on my frizz-prone hair.
- Wash hair every other day. When hair is dry, it is more prone to frizz. Washing hair every other day (or even more infrequently) enables your hair to retain its natural oils, thereby preventing dryness.
- Finish with a cold rinse. I gleaned this tip from my stylist when I asked her how to combat all of the heat I was using to straighten my hair. A cold water rinse after conditioning, helps to close the hair’s cuticle so that your hair retains the moisture from that product. The result is hair that looks shiny and healthy.
- Use a wide-toothed comb. Brushes can cause hair to split and should not be used on curly hair unless you are straightening it. Use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to detangle hair while maintaining its curl.
- Avoid using heat on your hair. The use of heat to dry, straighten and/or style hair can be very drying, which can lead to breakage and frizz. Summer is the perfect time to let your hair air-dry. Be sure to apply product before your hair dries.
If you’re still struggling to fight the frizz, be sure to carry a ponytail holder or clip for days when you feel like your hair is untamable.
