5 Things You Should Know This Cold and Flu Season *Giveaway*

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Danielle E!  Congrats!

No compensation was received for this post. Giveaway supplied by CVS/pharmacy.

We had not even completed the first month of school before all of us were sick with a bug.  I don’t know what it is about the coincidental timing of the new school year and cold and flu season, but every year it seems to force our family to take a much-needed break from our day-to-day routine to recoup. Every year around this time, my husband and I head over to our local CVS/pharmacy for our annual flu shot. It’s one of our first lines of defense against the flu virus which is much more serious than the minor cold we were down with a couple of weeks ago.

A couple of weeks ago, I spent three immersive days with CVS/pharmacy at their headquarters in Rhode Island.  During one of the sessions, we debunked some common cold and flu myths to help better prepare ourselves for the cold and flu season.  Here are 5 things you need to know about the flu and the common cold:

1.  There is no cure for the common cold, and supplements such as Airborne, have not been clinically tested.

2.  Vaccination is the first and best line of defense against the flu. The CDC recommends that adults and children over the age of 6 months receive the vaccination.

3.  The most contagious time period for a cold is 1 day before the onset of symptoms or 3 days after the initial exposure.  The most contagious time period for the flu is 5-7 days into the illness.

4.  While there is no cure for viruses, natural remedies like dark honey can coat and soothe a sore throat while lemon can help reduce mucus.

5.  When purchasing cold and flu remedies, remember that all CVS/pharmacy brands are held to the same standards and FDA regulations as national brands but priced 20-40% less.

CVS/pharmacy recently put together this infographic to prepare and educate families about the flu. I find it helpful to have the common symptoms and remedies right on hand and I’ve thought about printing and laminating it to put on our bulletin board.  Remember that if you get your flu shot at CVS/pharmacy, you’ll receive a 20% savings pass that can be used on a future purchase.

Great tips! The entire family just got their flu shots, and I’m really cracking down on the kiddos washing their hands now. Hopefully this will prevent all of us from getting too sick this season.
