5 Things You Didn’t Know About Diabetes

Every 19 seconds, someone in the US is diagnosed with diabetes.

Even before I studied diabetes in nursing school, I was already versed in the basics of this disease. A close family friend was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a child and self-administered insulin each day while she maintained strict control of her diet and even stringent monitoring of her blood sugar.  With diabetes now an epidemic in the US, I presume that you also likely know someone diagnosed with the disease. Because diabetes is predicted to be one of the top 10 leading causes of death in the US, it makes sense to know the basics of this disease, how you can prevent it, and what to do if you or someone you love is diagnosed with diabetes.

Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes Is Preventable: The statistics don’t lie. The prevalence of diabetes in America is astounding, and you may be feeling like why even bother trying to prevent the inevitable.  It is crucial to understand your risk factors and what can be done to mitigate them since this is a preventable disease.  Some risk factors like age, gender, race and family history can’t be altered, but understanding your risk profile can help you make the right lifestyle choices to prevent this disease.

Type 2 Diabetes is Insidious: 1 out of every 4 people living in the US do not know they have diabetes. Additionally, 1 out of every 3 people living in the US have prediabetes, and of those people, 9 out of 10 are unaware of their condition. Even if you don’t have any glaring risk factors, the reality is that diabetes is so prevalent, that every person needs to have a basic understanding of it, including the subtle symptoms that often present early in the disease.

There is no cure for Type 2 Diabetes: At present, there is no cure for Type 2 Diabetes and prevention remains the single most important action you can take to avoid this disease. However, for many living with insulin resistance (aka Type 2 Diabetes), lifestyle changes, oral medications and insulin can prevent or delay the onset of complications.

Diabetes is Costly: The cost of diabetes is astounding, with $245 billion spent each year on medical costs and lost work/wages. The overall cost of a diabetes diagnosis extends far beyond your pocket. The risk of death for those diagnosed with diabetes is 50% higher than the average population and much of that risk is related to the complications that can arise as a result of the disease.

Lifestyle Changes Are More Effective Than Medications: Despite the grim statistics, there is hope, even for the person diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Weight loss, exercise, and dietary changes have proven to be highly effective when it comes to preventing, treating and even possibly reversing the symptoms of Diabetes.
