It’s never a convenient time to get sick, and yet as a working mom, I’d trade places with my kids during an illness without a thought if I could. Without safe medicinal remedies and no cure for the common cold, I often find myself harkening back to the treatments my mother used on me as a child.
Many of the medications you see on the market to alleviate the symptoms of the common cold or influenza used to be available in pediatric forms. As a child, a minor medical condition prevented me from taking these medications, and rightly so, as their safety has been questioned and today, you won’t find many pediatric medications available for the common cold. To ease sinus congestion and cough, my mom would often rub Vicks VapoRub on my chest and throat, a practice she gleaned from her own mother.
There is something invigorating yet soothing about Vicks VapoRub, and I don’t ever remember a time when I didn’t have at least one jar on-hand for minor illnesses. Its familiar scent is a result of camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol, and it’s safety and use in kids over the age of 2 is longstanding. Vicks VapoRub was my mother’s go-to when nothing else worked and these days, it’s the first remedy I use when my own kids get sick.
Along with Vicks VapoRub, my mother had a simple, wellness-centered approach to the common cold. Whether you have a toddler, a teen, or somewhere in-between, here are 5 Natural Cold & Flu Remedies For Kids.
- Soup and Warm Liquids: Warm liquids have been shown to ease congestion and are often very soothing to sore throats.
- Honey: Dark honey contains antibacterial and antioxidant properties and has been shown to soothe inflammation and ease a cough.
- Cool Mist Humidifier: Adding moisture to the air in your home can help alleviate congestion. Be sure to avoid steam which can lead to burns.
- Rest: Despite a child’s propensity to run and play and go and do, rest is really the body’s natural way of healing itself. Coloring books, a favorite movie, and quiet board games can help encourage a child to rest during an illness.
- Saline Nasal Spray: Safe and effective, saline (a mixture of salt and water) can help alleviate stuffiness and congestion.
In addition to these 5 Natural Cold & Flu Remedies For Kids, I also find that a supply of soft tissues, a thermometer and my kids’ favorite stuffed animal can do wonders for helping them to feel better.
As a child, the best thing my mother did for me when I was sick was to be there. She had a way of assuring me that no matter how I felt in that moment, it was going to be ok, and this is how I’ve approached illness with my own children.
Many of the remedies I shared above are free or relatively inexpensive. In fact, you may already have some of these items in your home. Since we’re still in the midst of cold and flu season, I encourage you to put together a small wellness care kit containing the items above to have on-hand in the event of illness. You can stock up on wellness items, including Vicks VapoRub by visiting P&G’s dedicated website where you’ll find coupons that can save on Vicks products.
