I walked outside to my car and the cool breeze was biting. The winds had been blowing all night, which explained the dry, sore skin on my hands, always the first to suffer during the winter. The combination of colder temperatures and decreased humidity both indoors and outside can quickly result in dry, cracked, irritated skin. Fortunately, it doesn’t stay cold here for long, but during the few short winter months of Southern California, taking care of my skin is a priority.
My day-to-day skin care regimen is simple and includes cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting my skin from the sun. And while it doesn’t change much during the winter, there are 5 Easy Winter Skin Solutions I find helpful during this time of year to combat dryness and irritation.
- Cleanse with care. The first step in my winter skin routine is the simplest, but perhaps the most important. Cleansing the skin of makeup, your skin’s natural oils and dirt/environmental toxins not only helps ensure the products you’re using on your face are effective, but helps remove those substances that could accelerate signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. I like to use Dove Beauty Bars in place of soap since they are gentler and milder than soap and can be used on both face and body. Dove Beauty Bars contain DEFI technology which is a unique blend of cleansers and 1/4 moisturizing cream for soft, smooth, radiant skin. Unlike soap, which can strip skin of essential nutrients, Dove Beauty Bars contain skin natural lipids that help replenish the skin
- Exfoliate for a clean slate. Every day skin sloughs off dead cells as new ones are formed. Very often these cells sit on the skin’s surface, so removing them with a gentle exfoliator can help renew and revitalize your skin. Exfoliation can be done physically with a loofah or soft brush or chemically with a scrub.
- Moisturize to revitalize. Irrespective of age, your skin needs moisture, particularly during the winter months when indoor heating systems contribute to dryness and irritation. Choose an oil-free, lightweight moisturizer with a few simple ingredients and apply it daily before your sunscreen and makeup and at night once your skin is clean.
- Protect without fail. Science has proven that the sun’s rays are harmful and can contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Long-term exposure can also increase skin cancer risk, so investing in and using a good sunscreen is essential. I personally like Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide based sunscreens which tend to be the safest according to the Environmental Working Group. Apply after your moisturizer, or pick up a combination moisturizer/sunscreen for a more streamlined skin care routine. Remember to protect your skin daily, even when the sun is not shining since harmful rays can still penetrate skin.
- Hydrate daily. Our bodies are largely comprised of water, with skin containing as much as 64% water, so it would make sense that both would need consistent intakes to function. While increasing your consumption of water won’t necessarily eliminate signs of aging, understand it’s importance and commit to drinking the recommended amount (8 eight-ounce glasses).
Generally speaking, a simple your winter skin care routine will suffice for radiant-looking skin. I’ve found that the number of products I use on my skin has decreased dramatically when I simply cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect my skin from the sun’s rays.
