$5 Baked Holiday Gift Ideas

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

It’s definitely the season of baking and I’ve just left the sweetest place on Earth! While baked goods are abundant at parties and holiday gatherings, they also make great gifts! During my time out on the East Coast, I had an opportunity to visit at least 2 different Walmart Supercenter Stores.  You can imagine my excitement, given the fact that in my area, there are six locations within 50 miles, the closest 30 miles away.

Walking into a Supercenter is like walking into a combination Walmart/Supermarket.  It’s incredible.  My task?  To find the ingredients I needed to make a baked good for under $5.  In the spirit of traditional holiday baking, I decided I was going to make blossoms…Kisses Candy Cane Blossoms.  The recipe is super easy (we actually made Triple Chocolate Blossoms earlier this week) and is made with ingredients you likely have in your home.  Here is the recipe:

Kisses Candy Cane Blossoms

Ingredients:

  • 48 HERSHEY’S KISSES Brand Candy Cane Mint Candies
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Red or green sugar crystals, granulated sugar or powdered sugar

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Remove wrappers from candies.

2. Beat butter, granulated sugar, egg and vanilla in large bowl until well blended. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt; add alternately with milk to butter mixture, beating until well blended.

3. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in red sugar, granulated sugar, powdered sugar or a combination of any of the sugars. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.

4. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned and cookie is set. Remove from oven; cool 2 to 3 minutes. Press a candy piece into center of each cookie. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. About 4 dozen cookies.

Because I already had every single ingredient except for the Kisses, I spent under $3 to make 4 dozen cookies.

All Walmart stores have a baking section (although I now prefer the Supercenter stores for groceries and food items).  Along with traditional baking products, you’ll find seasonal varieties as well.  One of my other ideas for a $5 baked gift is to put the mix for cookies, cupcakes, or brownies in a jar.  You can take your own recipe’s dry ingredients (flour, sugar, chocolate chips, etc.) and layer them in a jar.  Adorn the jar with ribbon and attach a recipe card with a note printed on holiday-themed paper.

While there are a ton of baked gifts you could make for under $5, I also found some fun ideas at the store itself. Check out my Whrrl story from my trip to a Walmart Supercenter:
