This week marks the official start to the summer season, and with a new season comes a new wardrobe. Warm weather, backyard entertaining, and exciting destinations call for breezy, comfortable attire with a flare.
Yesterday, I met with fashion expert, makeup artist, actress, and TV personality Jeannie Mai, best known for her show on Style Network called “How Do I Look?” where she empowers women to discover their true beauty, overcome insecurities, and incorporate fashion to give them the confidence they need to achieve their professional goals. As part of a recent contest with Colgate Optic White, Mai put together 5 looks in 50 minutes for the winner and offered summer-focused fashion tips to help women look red-carpet ready, every day, on a budget.
One of the first things I noticed about Mai were her shoes. With beauties like these, I knew that the outfits and tips she would provide would be spot on!
As a woman, I’m cognizant of my appearance and strive to be on-trend when it comes to fashion, but as a mom, I don’t always have time to achieve this.
Mai offered several easy, feasible tips including the three must-have items every woman should have on-hand to achieve a clean, chic look:
1. Belts: Mai believes that a woman should never “waste a waist”. A great belt can help taper or enhance a woman’s waist.
2. Bright lip colors: A varied selection of glosses and lipsticks can instantly light up a woman’s face
3. Shapers and Undergarments: According to Mai, most women don’t realize they are wearing the wrong sized bra. Additionally, shapewear is great for “holding everything in.”
So what is hot this summer season? According to Mai, we will be seeing fabrics in bright colors including yellow, citrus, and sorbets. And to keep a woman’s look fresh and young, Mai suggests mixing bright patterns and colors. Gone are the days of matching nails, make-up and accessories and mixing it up helps a woman step outside the box while staying on-trend.

All five of the looks are unique, yet I can envision interchanging several of the pieces to create additional outfits. I wasn’t entirely surprised that Walmart offers a variety of on-trend wardrobe pieces, considering I recently put together 5 fashionable Spring Outfits. However, Mai was able to incorporate the latest fashion trends and challenged both the winner and myself to think outside the box and be adventurous while still taking into consideration our own unique sense of style.
