Someone recently asked me about my favorite foods…the meal I would choose if it were my last. While I love a good quinoa and kale salad or an indulgent slice of pizza, breakfast is hands-down my favorite meal of the day. I could eat breakfast for lunch or dinner and be completely satisfied. And perhaps that is why my hectic mornings are often at odds with my breakfast aspirations.
Pancakes, waffles, and omelets are traditionally reserved for weekends and holidays, so today I’m sharing my 3 of my favorite, healthy, On-the-Go Breakfast Ideas.
1. Cereal: During the school week, cereal is our family’s go-to breakfast meal. I can boil or scramble some eggs quickly and add some fresh fruit and we have a complete, healthy meal. With a seemingly endless number of cereal choices, it is important to note that some varieties offer whole grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds which add complexity and diversity in flavor and nutritional content. We’ve been enjoying Kellogg’s Origins new cereals, specifically their Fruit & Nut Blend which combines toasted oats, bran and corn flakes, walnuts, and cranberries. This particular variety is hearty and delicious and goes really well with almond or cashew milk. The entire Kellogg’s Origins line is free from artificial sweeteners, flavors and hydrogenated oils and are great sources of whole grains and fiber.
2. Granola: Admittedly, this is my favorite on-the-go breakfast idea because I can usually get by without adding in a protein when I’m really pressed for time. Admittedly, most granola varieties are full of sugar, which is why I was excited to try Kellogg’s Origins new Ancient Grains Granola varieties. The Cranberry Almond with Pumpkin Seeds variety is absolutely incredible! Pair these granola blends with nonfat Greek Yogurt for a hearty breakfast that will sustain you all the way through lunch.
3. Muesli: My first exposure to this delightful Swiss breakfast dish occurred during my travels through Europe. Traditionally served with milk or yogurt, this dish includes raw rolled oats, grains, fresh or dried fruits, seeds and nuts. It offers the heartiness of a granola but reminds me a lot of a cold oatmeal plus the dried fruit, nuts, and seeds. Kellogg’s Origins introduced 2 varieties, including their exotic Apricot Cashew Coconut With Raisins & Almonds blend. What’s unique about Muesli is that it really can be enjoyed hot (like an oatmeal) or cold (like a cereal or granola).
Each of these healthy, On-the-Go breakfast ideas can be prepared in less than 5 minutes, are incredibly satiating, and really act as a good source of fiber and whole grains. If you’re looking to diversify breakfast while still keeping it simple, I recommend trying Kellogg’s Origins ancient grains blends.
Kellogg’s Origins cereals, granolas and mueslis are available nationwide and retail for approximately $4.59. For more information, visit Kelloggs.com/Origins.
