My son picks out a pair of shorts and a graphic tee, and he’s already sitting down for breakfast while my daughter stares blankly at her closet. Gone are the days when I could pick anything for her to wear and she would happily oblige. As she asserts her style, I try to guide her towards outfits that are flattering yet modest, while still allowing plenty of independence.
You can imagine that with two children of opposite genders in two different ages and stages, back to school shopping can present a challenge. Fortunately, JCPenney really is a parent’s one-stop shopping destination. In addition to on-trend fashions that won’t break your budget, you’ll find accessories, shoes, backpacks, and even home decor (for the college-bound student) items from your favorite private, exclusive, and national brands. With an expansive, diverse selection to choose from and affordable prices, shopping with two kids at JCPenney is so worth it.
I always loved back-to-school shopping as a little girl. My mom and I would spend half a day casually perusing the stores at our local mall, trying on an endless number of outfits. As a mother of two, I simply don’t have the kind of time that would allow for an entire day of shopping. I LOVE that the three of us could walk into our local JCPenney and purchase clothes, shoes, accessories, and backpacks in one hour. Because let’s face it, even tweens tire of shopping after 15 minutes.
With just a few back-to-school trends in mind, I gave my kids quite a bit of freedom to choose their new outfits for the year. Inspired by the latest trends, here are 4 back-to-school looks we are loving this year.
- Camo/Green, Military: This wasn’t the first time my son picked out Camo Cargo Shorts. His interest in the military likely stems from family members who served our country. JCPenney offers a variety of camo and military-inspired fashion including oversized bomber jackets. If you want to soften the look, pair camo prints with blush tones for girls and a baseball cap for boys. My son paired these cargo shorts with a simple Short-Sleeve V-Neck Tee in black. The total cost of this outfit is just under $20. He completed this look with Fila Finity Running Shoes (on sale for $24.99).
- Femme Tops: One day my little girl wants to be sporty, the next feminine. And that is why I appreciate the expansive selection of styles at JCPenney. Her look features an Arizona Embroidered Tank paired with a Denim Scooter Skirt. Femme tops can include ruffles, flutter sleeves and lace to add a touch of elegance to any outfit. Of course my daughter had to assert her sense of style by completing her outfit with a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Kids Sneakers (her current favorite shoe). The outfit was just $20 and the shoes are currently on sale for $29.99.
- Kid’s Activewear: Comfort still trumps fashion for kids in elementary school. Recess and mid-week PE (physical education) are reason enough to select outfits with lightweight, breathable fabrics. Bonus points for vibrant colors and bold prints that are stylish enough to wear on and off the playground. My daughter paired these adorable Xersion Performance Space Dye Capri Leggings in black with an adorable Xersion Graphic T-Shirt asserting her Girl Power. With JCPenney’s current sale, this outfit is just under $20.
- Graphic tees: A mainstay for my son, graphic tees allow my him the freedom to express himself without saying a word. We like to pair JCPenney’s graphic tees with denim jeans or Arizona Cargo Shorts. This outfit is a steal at just $20.
2017 Back to School Trends
While kids love to assert their unique sense of style, they also tend to gravitate towards what is trending and what their friends are wearing. Here are 8 back to school trends we are seeing this year, all of which are available at JCPenney.
- 90s Retro: Pair destructed denim with bold pop culture graphic tees. Complete the look with oversized plaid flannels in updated colors.
- Retro Sport: Athleisure, which offers a relaxed, sporty feeling to your wardrobe, continues to be on-trend this season. Mix it up with solids and camo prints for a bold look.
- Victorian Romance: This style boasts a Bohemian and feminine mood. Velvet and lace are offset with distressed denim. Rich jewel tones are contrasted by soft neutrals.
- Rise to Shine: Running to class or practice? Look fantastic doing so with black and gold activewear. Fashion meets function with Monochromatic styles.
- White Sneakers: Comfortable and versatile, white tennis shoes are a wardrobe staple, perfect for dressing up a pair of jeans or down a knit dress. A fashion icon, white sneakers never go out of style.
- Booties: Comfortable and chic, booties are the perfect addition to a pair of jeans and a tee or a pencil skirt and a femme top.
- Destructed Denim: This rugged look features rips, raw edges and destructed details for a classic, broken-in look.
- Mini Backpacks and Personalization: Store all of your essentials in a personalized mini backpack. Make it your own with keychains, patches, and faux fur.
The four outfits I purchased for my kids (minus the shoes) totaled approximately $80 plus tax, which is incredible, considering their everyday value prices. JCPenney is having an incredible back-to-school sale with additional savings of up to 30% off online (code: SHOP37). You can also sign up for their JCPenney Rewards program to earn points for your purchases (you receive $10 for every 200 points earned).
