Disney’s Mary Poppins

I love the theater…the way the music evokes emotion…the connection between the audience and the cast…the sets which bring the story to life.  Disney’s Mary Poppins recently made it’s debut at Segerstrom Hall, complete with tap dancing on the ceiling and Mary taking flight over the audience.  The musical, which was inspired by both the 1964 film and a series of children’s books by P.L. Travers, brings the story about an enchanted English nanny to life on the stage.

It’s been many years since I’ve seen the film, and while it’s an enjoyable classic, I felt like the stage brought new depth to the characters and the story.  And speaking of the story, it’s one you’re likely familiar with.  A troubled family…children in need of discipline…and a nanny who’s “practically perfect.”

Seeing the film (or a version of it) on the stage was a delight. All elements of the set design are spectacular.  There are so many vibrant colors projected through lighting and set design that enhance the beauty of the backgrounds.  One scene in particular (Jolly Holiday), stands out where Mary and the children take a trip to a local park and the statutes come to life.  It’s a beautiful scene in a park that reminds me so much of places I’ve visited in England.

The score, which features music and lyrics by the Sherman Brothers, is superb. The music creates a feeling of familiarity and nostalgia among the audience while enhancing the emotion on-stage.
