I’m constantly amazed at the programs available for children these days. I don’t remember receiving a computer until I was in high school. And apart from writing papers and playing Solitaire, I don’t remember spending time doing anything else on it. More and more kids are going online to play games, read stories, and view programs. In fact, I recently learned of a computer program geared towards children ages 1-6!
A little over a week ago, the three of us headed to the famous Jim Henson Company in Los Angeles to preview Wilson & Ditch: Digging America. This web-based series, geared towards children ages 6-10, follows the adventures of two gopher brothers who explore America. Wilson and Ditch travel the country in their green-powered van learning all about American culture, history, and geography. The webisodes are short…only three or four minutes. However, based on their research, this is just the right amount of time for a child who is viewing web-based content. I was surprised at how much content could be covered in such a short amount of time.
Wilson & Ditch: Digging America, is produced by The Jim Henson Company and launched in January. The characters are brought to life using the Emmy Award-winning Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, technology that allows performers to puppeteer and voice digitally animated characters in real time (also used in Sid the Science Kid). Right now children can watch as Wilson and Ditch explore Nashville and Philadelphia and share experiences and resources for families visiting some of the country’s popular cities, national parks, and attractions. The series can be found on PBS Kids Go!, an online destination and resource for children and parents featuring the webisodes, interactive games, a travel blog, downloadable activities, and on-location audio podcasts.
As a mom who traveled extensively before having children, this is a necessary series. I only hope that my husband and I have the opportunity to take our children across the country to explore and learn about our history. Not every child will have this opportunity. What a great way to expose children to the diverse beauty our country offers. Wilson and Ditch are funny and entertaining…attributes that will appeal to children. They’re also teaching children about their country. Check out Wilson and Ditch on PBS Kids Go! It’s free!
Here is a look at where they’re heading next:
While we were on location at The Jim Henson Company, we had an opportunity to tour the lot, speak with Lisa and Brian Henson, and catch a filming of Sid the Science Kid. Check out some of my pictures from our day out.
I did not receive compensation for this post. I was invited by the company to preview the new series.
