The Perfect Grilled Cheese…by Kraft! (Plus a Giveaway!)

Posted by Caryn Bailey 5 Comments

*Update*

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by!  The winners are Jackie and 3boyzmom.  Congratulations!

I absolutely love grilled cheese.  When I was pregnant with my son, the only 2 things I wanted to eat during my first trimester were grilled cheese and macaroni and cheese.  These two comfort foods may be favorites of your children as well.  Up until this year, it was recommended that toddlers under the age of two drink whole cow’s milk.  In early July, the American Academy of Pediatrics altered this recommendation and stated that not all toddlers require whole milk until the age of 2, particularly if they are at risk of becoming obese due to a family history of obesity, heart disease, or high cholesterol.  Choosing lower fat milk is common among moms, but few continue that trend with cheese.

As we prepare to switch my son over to 2% milk, we also need to consider the fat content of other dairy sources like cheese and yogurt.  Kraft SIngles have always been the American’s cheese of choice for snacking and traditional grilled cheese sandwiches.  They have recently introduced their new 2% Kraft Singles which are now made from rBST-free cow’s milk.  In short, rBST is a growth hormone administered to cows to increase milk production.  I am accustomed to buying organic milk for our entire family because of my concerns over added hormones and subsequent precocious puberty (am I a teensy bit paranoid?) so I was delighted to try Kraft’s new 2% Singles.    We recently tried the “Sharp Cheddar” version of these singles and found that they taste great and melt just like traditional Singles.  If you’re concerned about providing your children “whole” foods, you might just give these a try!

Here is my favorite grilled cheese recipe! (adapted from this Whole Foods recipe)

2 slices multigrain bread
1 teaspoon whole grain mustard
1/2 Macintosh apple, cored and very thinly sliced
2 slices of cheese (sharp cheddar is preferred)
1 tablespoon butter, softened

Spread one slice of bread with mustard and arrange apple slices on top. Add cheese and top with second slice of bread. Spread butter on the outside of both slices of bread. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add sandwich and cook, turning once, until golden brown and cheese is melted. Transfer to a plate and serve.

Win It!  Would you like to try Kraft’s new 2% Singles with no added hormones?  Just leave me a comment indicating whether or not this subject is important to you and why.  Comments will close on January 1, 2008 at 10 pm PST.  The winner will be chosen on January 2, 2008.  One comment per person, please. I do worry about hormones in the products my kids eat. My son just turned 2 and just switched from whole mile to 2% milk, and I was glad that I got to go back to a less fat milk, but the hormones do worry me. I’d love to win this cheese and try it out!

I think that the less artificial or additives that my children ingest the better. Having two daughters, I worry about the affects of giving them products with added hormones.
