12 Things You Didn’t Know About Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Posted by Caryn Bailey 2 Comments

{Consideration provided by the Disneyland Resort}

Some of my favorite memories with my father were simple…Saturday nights watching the Hulk or cooking to the sounds of Mr. Blue Sky on his record player. Superheroes and classic music from the ’70s sum up my childhood. There was always music playing in our home and when we weren’t fishing off Malibu pier or camping at the lake, we were bonding over Spider-Man.

Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Dance Off

I wasn’t introduced to the Guardians of the Galaxy until Walt Disney Studios released their first film inspired by the classic comic book series three years ago. Boasting all of the action you would expect from Marvel Studios, this particular film resonated with me because of its humor, incredible score and phenomenal cast. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted in theaters earlier this Spring and I can’t decide which film I like better! While a third installment has been announced, at present there is no information regarding the plot or a release date. If you simply can’t wait to see adolescent Groot or Rocket’s latest antics, head to the Disneyland Resort this summer to experience Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout Premiere

The Collector

Inspired by the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, this brand new experience immerses guests in the original story as they help rescue the Guardians from The Collector in collaboration with Rocket. Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector, appeared in the original film as the keeper of the largest assemblage of relics and species from across the cosmos. While his collection can normally be found on planet Knowhere, it is currently on display at Disney California Adventure Park and features The Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout

Baby Groot

The Collector’s Fortress is surrounded by plants and trees from the known universe, which he has cleverly named the “Gardens of the Galaxy.” Inside the fortress holds The Guardians of the Galaxy, who are currently imprisoned in glass cases atop the fortress, dangling over the abyss. Your mission is to join Rocket, who has devised an ingenious breakout plan!  Featuring new special effects, appearances by the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord’s awesome mix tape, and thrilling drop sequences, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is an adventure you don’t want to miss this summer at the Disneyland Resort.

The Collectors Fortress

Standing at 183-feet tall, The Collector’s Fortress will house an adventure not seen anywhere else in the universe. From galactic species to exotic plant life, here are 12 Things You Didn’t Know About Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

  • Walt Disney Imagineering collaborated with director James Gunn, president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, much of the talent from the film and chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada to develop an experience where guests step into the story of the Guardians of the Galaxy with the original characters.

Guardians Baby Groot

  • The Collector’s Fortress is the tallest attraction at the Disneyland Resort and extends 40 feet underground.
  • The Gardens of the Galaxy feature 25 varieties of new shrubs (total 525), 13 varieties of trees (total 30), 20 varieties of plants (total 25), many of which are rare and unusual.

Groot

Rocket Raccoon

  • Along with starring Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Groot, and The Collector, Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! will feature appearances by Mantis, Abilisk, and The Collector’s assistant Apheta, who is new to this world.

Rocket Raccoons Blaster

  • The Collector’s Fortress features a collection of more than 2200 rare artifacts from around the galaxy including creatures, weapons, costumes and more. Interestingly enough, The Collector may choose to change out these artifacts at any time as new items come into his possession.

Asgardian War Hammer

Paint Cans

  • The Tivan Collection features sounds as well as artifacts, and guests will want to listen for Easter eggs including famous speeches (the Gettysburg Address), bird calls and creature sounds from planets throughout the galaxy, musical instrument sounds from varied civilizations and more.

Office

  • Look carefully at the items in the Tivan Collection. There are a number of items familiar to Disney Parks including a maquette of the ghost dog from the Haunted Mansion (featured in the Lobby video that showcases The Collector’s desk).
  • Guests will experience a special cameo by a Disney Legend and Super Hero Comic Book Writer Stan Lee, as they tour the Tivan Collection. Can you find them?
  • Listen closely. There are two languages used throughout the Tivan Collection including English and Celestial, native to the realm of Knowhere
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! features six different up-and-down ride profiles and story scenes. Guests will experience one of the following six songs that will play during their experience.
    • “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar
    • “Give Up The Funk” by Parliament
    • “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf
    • “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5
    • “Free Ride” by The Edgar Winter Group
    • “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley

Mission Breakout

  • Disney Imagineers used Virtual Reality technology to pre-visualize the Tivan Collection, The Collector’s Office and other aspects of the ride experience.
  • The ride system features more high-speed ride time than its predecessor with the thrills beginning as soon as the gantry lift doors close.

Tivan Collection

Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is an exciting new way to experience everything you loved about the first two films. The music is upbeat and nostalgic, the perfect complement to each of the ride sequences. One of the stand-outs from the two films was the irreverent humor, which provides for comic relief throughout the attraction. I absolutely loved the interplay of the characters and how the story felt like an extension of the original film. The ride itself is exhilarating and much of the appeal is not knowing when you are going to free-fall or be propelled upwards. While you wait to breakout the Guardians of the Galaxy, take note of all of the fascinating intricacies housed in the Tivan Collection.

Gamora Tee

As the ride culminates, be sure to visit The Collector’s Warehouse. In true Disney storytelling fashion, this would have been the final scene of the tour complete with creatures running amuck and the power fluctuating. The Tivan Group Staff has decided to take advantage of this chaos by selling off some of the newest items to guests during Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!

Ride Tips:

My best tip for minimizing your wait time is to obtain a FASTPASS. If you can get to Disney California Adventure Park at rope drop (when the park opens), this will increase your chances of getting a FASTPASS. It should be noted that there is no single rider line. If you are staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel, be sure to take advantage of Extra Magic Hour which allows entry one hour before regular park opening. Extra Magic Hour days at Disney California Adventure Park include Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
